Thumping/knocking sound from speakers

My computer is downstairs in my basement office, I kept hearing what I thought was someone at my front door knocking, no one there. Then I thought maybe it was the cat banging on the door to be let in, not so, sleeping as usual.Its every few minutes.
Finally just a few minutes ago I figured out it was coming from my speakers, at least the woofer anyway. Its thump, short pause , the six (I think) quick thumps, like someone knocking on the door rapidly. Gets louder when you turn the speakers up. Its really weird. I'm running an AMD 1.0 ghz cpu, ECS K7VMA Mainboard, 15 gb WD hard drive,256 mb RAM, Win98 SE. I have latest ZoneAlarm installed, when try Ctrl-Alt-DEL to see whats running I get explorer,zonealarm,systray,vetttray(think thats my inoculate it virus stuff)lexxps(printer)
Anybody have any ideas?

A good start would be to unistall, unwire the lot and start again........Check for an updated driver for your soundcard. Sounds more electrical though to me Good Luck!
