I have some .bmp pictures and want to convert them to .jpg

Can I do this? and if so, what do I need to do? Do I need a special program or something?

Yes you can convert them. All you need is a photo editing program. You can get several free ones from www.download.com (http://www.download.com)

Just open the bmp file in the editor and then click on "file" then Save As and then choose the file format you want to save it as http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Basically that simple

1)Open the .bmp file that you want to save with paint.

2)Click on file in the menu bar.

3)Click on save as.

4)From the save as type dropdown menu select JPEG

5)Click the save button.

Get the program called "any image" by FJM software. It's free somewhere out there. I forget where I got it from. It converts from anything to anything.

You can also use ACDSee's (http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10077-100-1808446.html?tag=st.dl.10001-103-1.lst-7-2.1808446) convert feature by right clicking on the image. It supports converting BMP, JPG, PCX, TGA, and TIF.

I'll side with NDC here:

ACDSee - cheap, VERY quick picture viewer, select large groups of files and then choose to covert to numerous different formats.

PaintShop Pro - originally nothing more than a picture viewr and converter... batch conversiosn also possible, more stable for BIG pictures (oh those 8000x8000 photo-scans = 250+meg!)....

enjoy!

A good free image viewer and editor is Irfanview!!!!
It even allows you to use some effect filters and stuff and best of all is free! (I think it is cardware or something!!?????)

If you are running a Microsoft OS, then just use their version of PC paint.

I'm with NDC and LostBok http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

ACDSee is the only one I use (Classic and 3.1) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I still use ACDSee V.2.4. I forgot to mention that you can do the conversion in a batch where you can select the images and convert them all at once! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Agree with NDC et al. ACDSEE the best. Its shareware: acdsystems.com, and if you don't register/buy, it still works but with a nag screen. Version 3.0 is out. Very fast and excellent.

Conversion of BMP to JPG is basically a compression. BMPs are uncompressed while JPG are compressed. Slight loss of clarity when you convert but huge reduction in file size. Besides with ACDSEE, you can set the compression level : high for small file size but poor image quality to low for larger file size and image quality almost as good as the BMP.

That's because ADCSee has the JPG quality option at 65% for conversions. However, this can be adjusted to have full quality by highlighting JPG under "Desired Output format" and then clicking on "Option"...
