hi guys!
rite now im using my old pc (win98) and i found out that the internet connection speed is about 47333kps... and im browsing the net pretty well with this old machine.
but with my new pc (win xp) the connection is about the same, but the transfer of data's seems to be very much slower compare to my old pc...

old pc: rockwell built in 56k modem (win98)
new pc: artnet internal 56k modem (win Xp)...
can anyone tell me is it bcos of the operating system? bcos i did ask some of my frens and they all agreed that by using win xp its much much slower in terms of transfer rate.

does the x-setup software applies only to networking or can i use it for dial up internet connection as well?

thanx

It is likely to be XP, as you are using a dial up connection. Microsoft god bless there souls, have configured it to be optimised for a broadband connection to the internet and have changed the MTU and made it a lot bigger around 1500.

The MTU is used for TCP/IP communictions and defines the sizes of packets (something like that not going to go in to the in's and outs)

Basically the MTU is too large and the modem is having to resend too many large packects to do packet loss etc. You need to re optimise the MTU for a dial up connection (like windows 98/95/Me were) this value is around 576, and can be changed in the registery

Have a look here (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-006) to see how to do that, but make sure you know what your doing before you edit the registry, muck it up and it could be bye byes for your OS

True! ANY time you make changes to the registry the first thing you should do is File - Export - give it a name, I like to use safe(todays date)
