I recently bought a Logitech Cordless Freedom Keyboard and Mouse combo, and I was wondering, is the energy in the batteries in the keyboard and mouse used up if the keyboard and mouse are just communicating with the receiver, or only if the keyboard and mouse are being used? I leave my computer on at night downloading things, so I thought that maybe I could just move the keyboard and mouse away from the computer to save the batteries, but I'm not sure if this would work. ?

they cost more, you sometimes loose reception and it has batteries you have to look after. sounds like just a pain in the....

As far as wireless keyboards go, I recently bought one (logitech) because here at school the desks are poorly set up, and the corded keyboards are a PAIN in the rear, due to length. I have never had any problems with communication or responsiveness. Battery has been running for 2 months now and are still almost full, which isnt bad for a gamer on one AA. I say go with logitech. I did not get the mouse, as I like the precision offered by an optical, and they eat batteries. I truly have had no problems, and would reccomend this keyboard to anyone. As far as batery life goes...it seems that it is no prob. Now i cannot speak for the keyboard mouse combo, but from my experience there seems to be no need to worry about the connectivity messages draining the bettery much. Hope this helps

I have the logitech cordless desktop pro. Had it for 2years now. Never had to replace batteries on the keyboard but the batteries on the mouse have been replaced 4 or 5 times... Needless to say I use the mouse more than the keyboard.
Don't really know about the power consumption but Ï've lived under the impression that it uses power whether you use it or not.

krohnjw,
I have just got a Logitech cordless optical mouse, I know others here have them it is great, far better than the MS cordless wheel mouse.
I agree that a codless keyboard is less inportant, but a cordles mouse is essential (IMHO)
As for batteries, the MS mouse uses a set in about 3-4 months, haven't had the Logitech long enough to tell.
The mouse is on all the time, but on very low consumption, its either that or they would have to fit a switch.

I've had a logitech cordless combo since last november. Best purchase yet for the computer.
Keyboard batteries have not been replaced yet but the mouse batteries have gone about 3 times. Have to say that when they go they go. The mouse just stops working don't notice any slowing down before hand. First time it happened thought had shot my system ;-).
I would have thought that both keyboard and mouse would communicate to the reciever only when a key was pressed or the mouse moved rather than a continious connection. So I don't see how moving them away would save on consumption.
Also you would have to move them quite a distance away to make any difference as mine work across the room and in the hall with the door closed between them. The pain of storing your keyboard and mouse down the hall in another room, or perhaps in a lead lined chest beside the computer ;-), is greater than the cost of a set of batteries every now and then.

I've had a Logitech cordless keyboard and mouse for about a year. I use re-chargeable batteries and just keep extras charged for when they go dead. With my old computer, we left it on all the time and it didn't seem to make any difference as to when the batteries would go dead. So I'd say they only use the batteries when in use.

Wouldn't it be cool if they had 'wind up' cordless keyboards. No batteries
The mouse could be like some watches today http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Regenerating energy as it moves, I think I move my mouse quite alot. Like kilometer a week http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Or how about the one and only..... Potato Mouse!!
One of my friends has the logitech cordless keyboard/mouse combo. She swears that it's the best purchase she's made yet.
I'm still using an ancient IBM keyboard... tough as a tank and almost as heavy. Until they make a cordless version, I'll NEVER part with it.

I love my cordless mouse/keyboard. I replaced the batteries in each twice and I owned the set for over a year. They are great. I keep the receiver on my desk or on top of my case which is under my desk. Works great.
