Hey Guys.
Charter Communications has 2 internet services around here (cable). There is Charter Pipeline - http://www.marcuscable.com/products/internet/internet.asp
and
Charter@Home (run by @Home I believe) - http://www.marcuscable.com/products/internet/athome.asp
Any Ideas?
Is @Home junk?
Would Pipeline be better?

i have @home and its been very good to me even know its capped at 35 kbs :-P
but overall i love the d/l speeds. its pretty new out here so i guess thats the reason for awsome speeds. but i heard that @home might lose several big internet companies. i heard one was cox (which is me http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif) we will have to see
What are the costs for the two services?

To tell you the truth, I only know the price for Pipeline. For 128k up, 256k down (that is average. It is maxed at 256k up/512k down. At least they are honest about speeds!) is 21.95 /mo + 3.95 a month for a modem (Motorola Surfboard 3100) and $10 extra if you don't have their cable TV. That comes out to about $35 a month. That is still cheaper than most Cable Companies.

I use charter pipeline currently..
i pay 24.95 a month for service.. plus like 2 bucks a month to rent the modem..
i get 512k up/down... yep.. both ways..
60k/s downloads are fast enough, even an ISO image (like a linux CD image) only takes a few hours..
of course the 60k/s upload is nice too.. send files to your friends at decent speed.. also I think it helps the games.. i can upload/download in the background and games like Counterstrike still run good http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif
My cousin has @Home service.. he gets at least 1mbit down but only 128k up..
My advice.. check the minimum rate they will provide.. and whatever one is better for your needs.. pick that one.. (not to mention price difference if any)

Charters cable service is Run by HSA and there support is terrible even for tier2 guys like me when i was an installer/VAR for them.
I know that charter used to use HSA, but I think they have their own "pipeline" to the internet now. They bought out a ton of the local companies (marcus for example) and I think the @Home one is the only one that uses another company.

I'm on Charter Pipeline and for the most part love it, I'll never go back to dialup.
I've had a couple problems with getting them bypass the cache server for SysOpt, but the support people are pretty good, once you find the right person to yell at http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif, I've got about 7 direct email addys for different techs and administrators.
My download speeds vary by server used, but when I run bandwidth tests I get about 390kps on average. Most of my RealPlayer vid streams come in at 300kps or so. Downloads max at around 80kps from really good servers (like Microsoft).
Total downtime for the 2.5 years that I have had Pipeline can be measured in hours, like about 30 total, it was down once for about 7 hours, but I found out that a truck had taken out a pole, and the downtime was the replacement time.
One of the really nice things about Pipeline is that you can connect your modem to anywhere on their system (they cover 2 counties here) and connect to the net, it's really handy for LAN parties!
Well, it looks like I will be getting Pipeline for 3 months next month (first month free).
I hope.
