This is a new hard drive. It's a Seagate 160 GB sata150. Pretty much since I bought it, less then a month ago it's been causing problems. I'm gonna do an rma with an manufarurer but before I just wanted to check what you about this problem...

All the connections are done properly, so it's not the cables.
What happens is I start the PC 15 to 20 minutes down the road it freezes shortly, gives a way that short metal scratching sound and PC continues to work normaly. Then the scratching gets louder and longer for like 30 seconds my pc freezes. Then finally it happens again and the PC freezes for good. It doesnt always happend in this order, today I turned on the PC and it froze on the desktop just after couple of minutes. I know for fact its the HD.
Anyone seen something similar...Anyway I can't return it to the store but Seagate will give me a new one. It's just after this experience I don't really want to use seagate but matrox or hitachi (in all of my other systems).

Thanks...

Sounds like the drive is overheating. Can you get some cooling on it directly?

At any rate, it should not do that. I would return it and plan some sort of cooling strategy for the new drive.

I don't know about over heating...but system temp is really low and I got an Antec fan blowing right at the HD. I got a lot of fans in the case...its freakin' loud. Even with head phones I can still hear it...but I don't mind it.

I somehow think it's just a bad hd but I've never came across a bad one so I did not know what the symptoms are.

I guess I'll replace it and if the same thing happens again...well who knows...

I would not wait. Submit an RMA and have it cross-shipped so that you can copy your drive.

Yea that's what I'm doing...I dont have too much date on it tho since I have storage disks. I'll just reinstall XP etc.
