New Year's prediction: Longhorn will never ship, but Microsoft Linux will. Even if I'm wrong, it's clear that software development is headed for a new place, and the end game that most observers saw even five years ago -- that MS would win it all -- doesn't seem as likely on the eve of 2004. That said, Microsoft isn't going to go away, in this author's opinion.

Sounds far fetched, but hey, anything could happen. ;)

Why not? After all, like the author said, Apple switched, GE switched, and so have many other things in history. I don't think they'll back down though. Microsoft won't give up the "throw money at it and it will go away" approach until they're out of cash. They won't admit when they're beaten.

I'm sure they will develop at least 2 more Windows after Longhorn before they would ever to Linux. 95%+ percent of computers still use Windows, so it's not going away any time soon. :t

I don't believe this until I see it; it's a complete change of philosophy for MS, the landmark in "pay for it" software
