I have installed HP Deskjet 940C XP drivers on my new system:

XP pro sp1a
IC7g
2.6 c

XP knows there is a 940 printer at the end of the parallel cable, but I get this message on boot:

Found new hardware
Can not install this hardware
There was a problem installing HP deskjet 940c
An error occurred during the installation of this device

'The RPC Server is not available'

I have uninstalled, re-downloaded drivers and reinstalled with same results

This is a new system, everything is behaving well and this is first issue

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Have you "tweaked" Windows by disabling some services? There are two Remote Procedure Call services.

Are you clean of viruses? Are you sure?

Just for kicks, go to Device Manager > Ports > LPT port. In the Port Settings, allow any IRQ that's assigned to the port.

BipolarBill, thanks for your comments

I need help understanding what might need to be tweaked and disabled and how to do it

Can you comment more on the 2 RPCs in general-I'm new to XP and frankly don't understand RPC

'allow any IRQ that's assigned to the port' didn't solve the problem

I can not say for sure I'm virus free-I need a new virus scanner for this system-do you favor a particular one?

I prefer free ones:

In Administrative Tools, you will find Services. You can right-click My Computer and select Manage to get there too. In Services, make sure that Remote Procedure Call is started and set to automatic.

BipolarBill

Freeav didn't find any virus and RPC services was started and automatic

Soo, I punted and reloaded XP and installed the HP drivers before most other things and everything is good!

Thanks for your help-at least I learned several things and got a great lead on the virus scanners.
