I am trying to help my firend go wireless and she lives in an apparment bulding. If I get a Linksys WRT54G and a wireless card would the signal be strong enough to go through two thick walls. It is not a large apartment nor is it small it is about the size of the average 1st floor in a house. I am placing the router in her living room which is to the front of the apartment and the ther wireless card is going in her laptop which will be in her room at the back of th apartment. I know that this wireless technology has a range of 300ft but would be the same in this case? If you could just let me know and Ill get them going.

The walls will kill the signal. it really depends on how thick they are and what materials are used. Line of sight is always best. You should really try to get the AP in the center of the apartment if possible.

MY suggestion is put the access point by the window. Also High gain antenna's for WiFi can be made out of pringles tubes,
Have a look here (http://www.cantenna.com/)
and here (http://www.windley.com/2002/11/02.html)
But honestly I have the WRT54G and the WMP54G PCI card, and they are OK. I have the access point on the first floor in mu house and my PC downstairs and the server in the garage (both on ground floor) seem to be ok.
Through put is not so good though I rearly get over 3Mbit/Sec when transferring files, for broadband is fine though.

I have an access point in my closet that goes through 3 walls to the living room, roughly 100ft and i get a good connection.
Matirial is big. My walls are normal house stuff but if the walls are cement or brick or something thick it will be harder. Is it a high rise appartment or just a one or two story one? Taller the building generaly thicker the walls.
