I have a Gateway Essential 566C comp with a Celeron 566 and 64 MB of PC100 SDRAM, which is 72-bit, 8 x 8. All I can find in town is 64-bit 16 x 16 stuff, will this work as well? I have heard that I have to have 72-bit and 64-bit won't work, and I have also heard it has to be 8 x 16 and 16 x 16 won't work. Please explain what I can and can't use!!!

why do you have 72bit ram in a celeron system? are you sure? that would be ECC, which really isn't necessary for a lowly workstation. did you check your bios to see if you really have ECC sdram?

go to www.crucial.com and use their configurator to figure out exactly what specs you need.

Yeah, for a mobo that old I would definately go with Crucial :)

What chipset does that board use?

Most Gateways with that processor were 815-I, or 810-I Intel.

Neither of which even supports 72-bit (ECC) RAM. We need to sort this out before sending him off to spend money ;)

Actually I have replaced ram in a system with memory in my shop many times with 810i/815i mobos. I don't normally carry the stuf but sometimes get those modules. Otherwise I would PM you and send you a stick or two. Most that I replaced mem for (or added) were Emachines and H.P PC's (older of course).

Here is the crucial page with your exact model and ram that matched up perfecly. All sorted out now ;)
