Hi,

I have a Soltek SL75DRV2 motherboard fitted with 512MB crucial 266MHz DDR Ram and an Athlon 1333. I'm using Windows XP Pro.

I don't overclock the PC and it runs at the default 1333MHz (10.0x133) using the deafulat CPU voltage and Ram setting, and the PC has ran fine for years.

A few days ago I decided to replace the fan from the CPU Heatsink with a better one and so carefully unscrewed the fan from the actual heatsink and put on the more powerful yet quiter one.

After doing so the PC worked fine. However, the next day when I tried to turn on the PC, it would not boot.

After lots of checking and testing (at first I tought the PSU had gone or the DDR Ram had become loose etc.), I found that the only way I could get the PC to boot was to manually set the DIP switches on the motherboard to the 11x multiplier hence overclocking the CPU to 1466MHz (11.0x133 = 1466).

Once I did this the PC would boot fine and work fine provided I didn't do something really demanding like play a game etc. at which point it would BSOD.

I then tried to return the PC to 1333MHz by first setting the motherboard DIP switch to autodetect the CPU multiplier and then manually setting the correct multiplier (10x), but found doing this would not work. The PC would not boot.

The only way I could gt it to boot is to set a 11x mulitplier or higher. However, once the PC has booted and in Windows, and after I have used it for a few minutes, I discovered I could shut it down and then reset the multiplier to 10 (either manually, or let it autodetect), and the PC would boot fine and work fine and not crash when palying a demanding game etc.

I replaced the new fan with the original old fan for the heatsink (I am using the stock heatsink and fan from a retail boxed AthlonXP 1800) but found the problem outlined still exists. The PC will not boot from COLD at 1333MHz (10x133), only 1466MHz (11x133) or above, and only after the PC has been running for a few minutes can I shutdown and reset it to 1333Mhz and boot.

This warm boot only issue has got me puzzled, Anyone know what the problem could be or suggest what I can do?

Any feedback is appreciated as always.

Thanks.

Check your capacitors:

They all look fine.

Don'tthink it is the capacitors as this problem only started when I changed the CPU fan (even though I now changed the fan back, the problems still there).

Take the board out and place the heatsink properly where you can see it.

While you have the board out, clear CMOS by removing the battery for a minute. If your motherboard has no thermal protection, you may have fried the CPU. :(
