I finally have norton anti vir installed on my second comp, wouldn't let me activate the software, finally found out the firewall was the culprit.

Now it's acting very strange, it won't let me alter the config settings, ie activating self protect and letting me activate e-mail scan.

Tried setting it in the main screen and in the options menu but after restart everythings back to the old settings.

Does someone maybe know how to make the settings stick. (maybe know which registry settings to alter)

I'm running it on a Win me system with the latest patches installed.

By the way I ran the Norton system scan and it did find something, but it was deleted by me. So the comp is virus free to the best of my knowledge.

Perhaps remoce it an reinstall and see if it acts better.

Yeah, could do that, just thought there maybe a quick fix.

Went to Symantec site, looks like it's a known problem which can be fixed by getting the latest update using Live update.

Thing is, I allready did the update, when I press Live update now I get the message, a Live update session is allready running.
Deleted it using taskmanager, but then Norton doesn't respond at all.

I'll schedule an uninstall and reinstall for the weekend.

Most of the viruses since Sept have a habit of disabling AV programs. If you found one bug, there may be another. Try scanning here first:

Get this too:

www.freeav.com

It found two bugs that Panda missed on a client's PC.

It seems your hunch was right on the money!!

It's still running Panda, but already it has detected 2 virusses, it managed to disinfect one of them. Not sure what it's going to do about the other one.

If it says which virus it is in the report I can probably remove it manually.

Running Panda again, because yesterday it froze.
The virus count is now at 33!!!

Another question, my main computer has NOrton ANti Vir 2004 Pro installed and up till now it has stopped every single virus send to me by mail (by people I don't even know, no idea how they got my email address).

Today to my shock I got this message in the mail, check out the txt file.

It says that I send that person (whom I don't even know) an email with a virus attached.

Checked my send items box, can't find an email with the persons address on it.

Also ran Panda on this system, but it's clean.
Any thoughts on how this person could think I was the sender??

By the way, I erased my email address and that from the sender for obvious reasons.

You should seriously consider formatting both PCs.

The Klez virus does not get sent out through your e-mail program and will not show in the Sent items. You are positively crawling with bugs. You can try to clean up, but it will take a long time and Windows will likely have permanent damage.

Check all floppies for viruses and format. That's my advice.

Shoot!! Formatting is the last thing I wanna do, I don't know how it got to my main system, I kept the virus definitions up to date.

I've cleaned out the second computer and got Norton up and running, it managed to detect another virus and erased it.

If I keep getting signs that people are getting attachments with virusses from me, then I'll format the drives.

You've got to understand that I have a lot of software installed and it's going to take a long time to reinstall, not to mention trying to find every single activation and registration code.

If I'm lucky I can find an image that's not too old. (stupid me, always make sure you have burnt a recent image on a dvd R+)

This is what I found about the perticular virus on the Symantec site.

My main rig appears to be save (thank goodness for that), I guess the virus got my name from the second computer's address book.

Email spoofing
This worm often uses a technique called "spoofing." When the worm performs its email routine, it can use a randomly chosen address it finds on an infected computer as the "From:" address. Numerous cases have been reported in which users of uninfected computers received complaints that they sent an infected message to someone else.

For example, Linda Anderson is using a computer infected with W32.Klez.H@mm. Linda is not using an antivirus program or does not have the current virus definitions. When W32.Klez.H@mm performs its emailing routine, it finds the email address of Harold Logan. The worm inserts Harold's email address into the "From:" portion of an infected message, which the worm then sends to Janet Bishop. Then, Janet contacts Harold and complains that he sent her an infected message, but when Harold scans his computer, Norton AntiVirus (NAV) does not find anything because his computer is not infected.

If you are using a current version of Norton AntiVirus, have the most recent virus definitions, and a full system scan with Norton AntiVirus, which is set to scan all the files, does not find anything, be assured that your computer is not infected with this worm.

The thing is that you have not been keeping up with your antivirus. You definitely have at least a few. We know this.

Despite spoofing, and e-mailed virus can still be properly traced, so don't go thinking that this whole thing is someone else's fault.

Sure - scan with Norton, but scan with AVG and AntiVir too. They are free.

Will do, it's not that I'm blaming someone else for it and thinking that I'm absolutely blameless.

It's just with my main computer I'm sure it has no virus, it's just my second computer which has been running without a virus scanner for almost a month because the activation of Norton didn't succeed, could possibly be the reason why my main computer is receiving virusses through the mail (which were detected and destroyed).

That's not to say I'm not taking on your advice, I'm definitely going to run those other scans on both of them.

Thanks for your help so far BPB.

Did you have a previous version of NAV installed?
Have you contacted Symantec Support?

I was having trouble with mine just recently. In order to properly install NAV 2004, they suggest a complete removal of all other versions. See below:

Rnav2003.exe is a utility that manually uninstalls the program files and registry entries that are installed by NAV 5.0/2000/2001/2002/2003. Please follow the steps in the URL provided below to uninstall NAV by using Rnav2003.exe:

Title: 'How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus by using the Rnav2003.exe removal utility'
Document ID: 2001092114452606
Web URL: http://service1.symantec.com/support/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606

Download and run the program, then install NAV 2004. Hope that helps.
