I've got a problem. My daughters friend has told us that my 10 yr old daughter is talking to a 20 yr old man. They are using email and not chatting yet. She has an email at mail.check.com. My question is how can I stop this & possibly even find out what they have talked about. A 20 yr old has no business talking w/ a 10 yr old girl so I want to know if anything illegal has happened. I cannot monitor her computer usage as I work all day as does her mother & she is alone in the house. I'm going nuts & getting more pissed off by the moment. BTW daughter says she's not doing it but by checking my history I see that she visits the previous mentioned mail site quite often. I know there is monitoring software like cybernanny but don't really want to have to use it unless it comes down to it. Basically what I want to do is write this boy & let him know what he's gotten himself into.

Easy enough. Dont give her unsupervised access to the computer. Or better yet, take the internet away.

I am sorry there is no reason for any 20 y/o male to be talking to a 10 y/o girl. A 10 y/o is not old enough to make those kinds of decisions. Stop it immidiately.

You might consider going into setup and setting a POWER ON PASSWORD. This is easy enough to do and then your daughter can't access the computer unless you or your wife are home to enter the password for her.

Take the power cord to work with you and call the police. Then sit your daughter down and have a long talk.

I'm sorry, but if my children weren't being upfront with me, there would be a case lock on the computer, and a bios password..the computer would be OFF before I left the house. BTW..how did a 20 yr old get your daughters email addy if they aren't chatting??
..and I don't care what anyone says..I can and will have access to any account one of my kids has if I choose to, it's my equipment, and their priveledge...time for a serious talk with your daughter...

Mike, have you found a solution yet?

I don't have any suggestions for you, but I'd sure cut off her unmonitored internet access until you find out what's going on. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

PS this is the first time I noticed this thread. If you want, I can change the topic title to something more descriptive that will generate more replies, maybe:

How can I find out who's emailing my 10 yr. old daughter?

There are so many horror stories about this type of situation lately.

One thing is that the "20-year-old" may be 20, or 70, or anywhere in between.
Your daughter is only getting the info that this guy chooses to give her.
These things often progress to a request for a meeting in person.

Please, help yourself, your daughter, and all parents and children.

REPORT THIS TO A LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY.

If this guy doesn't get whatever he wants, he may very well move on to someone else.
He probably has more than one of these type things going on at the same time.

Most states, and some major metro areas, have made a very serious effort to combat this.
Start with your local police department, and ask for referrals if they don't do this themselves.

I've checked out both of the sites that were mentioned & I really can't afford to purchase any software. Is there some sort of freeware or shareware progam that you know of? BTW I don't know how he got her email addy if you weren't chatting. Good point. I am running into trouble w/ mom though as she tends to always believe the daughter & calls me paranoid. Still trying to work on her as she doesn't understand the seriousness of what could be going on. I don't want to call the police b/c I can't prove anything yet. Thanks for all of your help & concerns so far.

I have to agree with the other posts. If see can't be trusted to not step out of bounds then she shouldn't be able to use it. A password at the BIOS would keep her for accessing the computer (unless she's A+ certified). Another way is to use the keybord/input lock.

Keep in mind, it's not illegal to talk to anyone no matter the age. So before you call the authorities, find out what has been said.If it's just harmless babbling about NSYNC or something, then you'll feel real dumb.
