You remember the deal, a new Dell 900mhz Pentium 3, 20gb HD, 64mb RAM, Win ME, 3 yr warranty for $285.00 + tx & Free Shipping..

www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum10/HTML/001850.html (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum10/HTML/001850.html)

Well, I got one, pretty black case.

Some may remember when I got a 800mhz Dell in Oct 2000 for some $450~
Well, It was/is a PIG http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
Takes 2 full minutes to boot, Windows Explorer moves faster on my Pentium 100's & 120's, SERIOUSLY !

NOW, I must apologize to Michael Dell, my Dinner of undercooked Crow awaits.

This one is TOTALLY different, even with the pitiful ME o/s

It boots in 35 seconds, Explorer opens programs quickly, large programs snap open, so UNLIKE all other store bought machines I've encountered in the past.

BTW ,,THIS one came with MS Word, Picture IT Full Ed, Works, MS Office Tools ?, and the usual host of trivial stuff, OH a wad of games too.

So when someone asks for a "Store Bought" computer, you can tell them to wait on a deal from Dell and you will NOT lose sleep at night thinking how you've slighted them.

No offense, but wasn't there a handling charge of like $300 for that 900 system? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Don't be fooled, Richard,

Don't get me wrong--I'm very glad you got a good computer--and Dell is certainly capable of making one. Truth is, though, for every computer (made by ANY manufacturer) that ran great out of the box, I've seen at least five that didn't. Kudos to Dell for sending you a great box, but I'd like to know why I've had to work on so many brand-new Dell P4's in the last week.

It's kind of like that with gateways too. After we put the same image on 5 identical p4's, only 1 or 2 seem to do the work at p4 speeds. The rest only seem as fast as the p3's the school upgraded from.

And then, about 1 in 25 harddrives make a clicking sound too and have to be sent back to gateway. (They're western digital btw). 1 in 25 doesn't sound bad unless you have a tight schedule to install 900 computers over the summer with 6 people.

The starting figure was $285.00
They added tax, and NO shipping or handling fee

Total was $305 and change, and with a 3yr warranty.

Oddly, in the system tray, there was only 2 icons there, very unlike a major mfg not to put a dozen items in the start-up file.

Maybe they have SPIES here at SYSOPT and are starting to listen to people who know how a computer SHOULD RUN http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Booting time is 80% dependent on HD speed. What kind of HD was in the 800?

errr, I THINK it was a Quantum 10g 5400, this one, the 900 is a 10g Maxtor model 2B20H1

The 800 was a Pentium 3
The 900 is a Celery

The fastest booting mobo ever to enter here was a Biostar Socket 370 M6TWC with a 366 o/c to 412 & 10g Quantum LM 7200

I trim all machines that I use to just 3 items in MSCONFIG, this hopefully will allow a more fair evaluation.

BTW, the ECS KS7A w/Duron 850 & 128PC2100 & Quantum 10g AS boots in about 40 seconds.

Congratulations on a great deal! I hope Dell does it again soon!! I want to buy or build two systems by the end of this month for a MS W2k Server class I'm taking and two Dell 900's for $285 or so apiece sounds good to me. Thanks for your posts Richard!
