In May, Halliburton admitted that, under Cheney's stewardship, it paid "$2.4 million in bribes to Nigerian officials to get favorable tax treatment."

maje87c are you aware that this forum was started in 2000 so that the members did not tie up the general forum with political discussions?
Yes I am aware of the hate and vitrolic agressiveness that can be had on this board I have seen it firsthand.
I believe the ones that stoop to flooding in boxes with porn and all of the the other childish pranks are no longer on this board.
I joined this forum 5 days after buying my first pc in 1999. I have a new name and a lot more knowledge now. Now I know how to fight back and I am not newby enough to put my vitals on the net anymore.
I was taught 60 years ago that if you tell the truth always, dont steal, dont fish in anothermans pond you will eventually be ok in the eyes of your god no matter who or for that matter what he/she/it happens to be.

One thing that strikes me about GWB's inner circle is that there are so many possible 'vested interests' interests in there that the potential for corruption is phenomenal

Aren't they all multi-millionaires?

We all know that the one thing that rich powerful people realy want is to become more rich and more powerful. Surely its not a good idea to let these kinds of people run a country.

I thought it quite sweet of them all to name an oil tanker after Ms Rice because shes only got $5 million or so to her name.

Hey, charity begins at home. :D

Most of them are yeah, theres a big thing in 'Stupid White Men' listing what the big players are worth and how they came to aqquire their positions (environmental protection ministers with shares in fuel companies...hmmn).

To be honest i dont like the idea of any politicians wether they be left right or centre having any ties to big business at all, all that you get as a result is a system where corruption and potential for corruption is as rife as the distrust the electorate have of their representatives and ultimatley results in personal gain rather than the well being of the masses being the motivation behind political action.

How about this?

All elected officials should undergo a manditory conflict of interest investigation rather than just relying on them to tell us if they have a conflict. If they fail the investigation (conflicts however small are found) then the job goes to the next candidate providing he/she passes the same investigation.

If it were known that you would be investigated before being allowed to take office, its quite likely that those with possible conflicts wouldn't run for the positions in the first place.

In the US system at least, it would appear than there could never be a seperation of big business and the government.
The majority of a candidate's or party's campaign contributions come from big business and when you take a second look its pretty clear that they are just bribes so that BB will get the concessions it wants from the guy they paid the most to.

The events of 911 led to a very interesting example of this.
Introduced almost overnight was a long list of things you couldn't carry on a plane or in hand luggage. This list included sensible things such as knives and other things capable of injuring/threatening someone with.
Now, we can probably all remember the guy who packed his shoes with explosives and then tried to explode them using a cigarette lighter. He was foiled by several passengers.
Cigarette Lighters ARE NOT ON THE BANNED LIST! Even though smoking is not allowed on most flights.
Why? Well the big tobacco companies whispered in GWB's ear to allow lighters on flights because it was important that their customers could 'light up' the moment they stepped off the plane.
So, to ensure their funding for the next election, the concession was made and air travel is still potentially dangerous. After all, a lighter is a container of pressurized butane and a plane is under pressurized. Hmmm.

the seats and cushions are not fire resistant, as a matter of fact they burn like solid gasoline or so I was told by a local fire inspector during a discussion on just that possibility.
The number one killer in plane crashes is smoke inhaled from burning seats and plastic luggage racks in the overhead.
In the event of a fire the o2 masks dropdown and acelerate the fire and the burning plastic hoses add to the poison gasses you breathe. There is no survival in a cabin fire at altitude the plane will go down as the one did in the everglades. That one started in the cargo hold but burned through to the passenger comp. the autopsies said they were dead before impact.
