Wow..... was browsing around gateways site and ran across this..... finally i can play solitaire and write that report at the same time now that i got HT on my new CPU.

"Hyper-threading
Run two programs at once with Intel's state-of-the-art Hyper-threading technology. Juggle two programs at once when you convert music and edit a video or play a game and encode a CD at the same time.

Benefits:
Increase productivity
Run two programs simultaneously
Decrease system slowdowns
Enhance performance and efficiency "

Talk about misleading customers.... of course not like most customers would even understand even if gateway relly did explain it!!! Looks like the marketing folks got a little to far out of the box here.....

I was going to say that you don't seem to have many friends till I read the last paragraph :)

As far as I know HT is simply a method to keep the P4's overlong pipelines full.
I think they are something like 20 instructions long and so if the branch prediction thingumy makes a mistake you have to wait till the 20 stage pipeline fills up again before proceeding. This really slows things down.

AMD have a much shorter pipeline (10-12 I think)so if an error is made it takes nowhere near as long to fill the pipeline and carry on.

P4s can reach nice high clock speeds because they have a long pipeline and its usually (well more often than not) filled with correct data. Things like encoding video/audio work quite well in this way which is why the P4s always benchmark better than the Athlons at these kind of tasks.

HT running a single program is often slower than if you ran it on a non-HT chip. Good one Intel.

yeah... this "EASY PC" thing has gotten out of hand..... everytime i hear the Dell commercial "Forget mega-this, and Giga-that....just tell us what you want to do and well build the system for you" i want to vomit......

Since when has it become a good practice to become a ignorant customer? You wouldnt buy a car if the dealer said "Forget 4 door this, and 2.0 liter that.... just tell us what you want to do and we will pick out the vehicle for you."

Perhaps when PCI-X is released we will be able to use multiple PCI card AT THE SAME TIME!

Sad thing is... i hate it when people come to me claiming how great this new technology is.... and they dont have a single clue about what it really does.

Ignorant consumers are the wave of the future. Just like the increasing number of welfare recipients.
