I get this error while attempting to run a 3d rendering program called Carrara with windows XP. It is no longer supported but was designed for win98/me/2000. I tried compatability mode in XP but no joy. It was made by MetaCreations and all thier other software works great with XP. Does anyone know a work around or is it time to dual boot with win2000 server which I have a copy of? All my other graphics programs made by the same company work with XP but this one.

This isn't exactly the same problem but explains how to re-install the Msvcrt.dll File (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=240032), which *may* help? Good luck! :D

That file exists in 16 different folders on my current configuration. It looks like it is in the root directories of the application files it was created with. I suspect it hands over parameters to windows which would make it only compatable with the particular applications it was written for. Fortunately there is always hope at sysopt. :)

You can search your CD for the 3D rending program and find the MSVCRT.DLL that is on that CD. COpy it into the same folder as the progam is installed in. It may use the DLL from the folder and start working.

I do this for Publisher 97 because in XP a DLL is newer and Publisher 97 will not install or run. I copy the DLL from the windows folder and replace it with the one from the publisher CD. I then install publisher and and return the original file to the windows directory and the CD file to the publisher folder. Everything works as expected. I do this because Publisher 2000 will not read Publisher 97 files and I still need to use the old files as we update them to publisher 2000.

After thinking about it for a while, I thought that was the most logical next step. DOS always looks for the file first in the root directory which is the way it should work but I don't know about XP. If it doesn't work right it's not a real problem if I create a restore point first. I'll try it. Thanks rraehal. :)

But now, for the good news, I didn't crash the registry. :p

MSVCRT.dll had given me a lot of problems long time back with ACDsee....

even when extracting it from the OS cd didn't help.

Then i did some kinda "Krazy Kahuna" stuff....searched for all available dll's(MSVCRT.dll) on google. Downloaded around 7 to 8 versions of them all of different sizes and tried one by one.

One of them solved it......its kinda crazy.:x

That may help, i think.;)
