I remember a thead awhile back which posed the question if we'd see games on DVD's and how long it'd be till we would... well

"I guess HL2 will have more than one CD, will there be a DVD version of the game?

Gabe Newell: Yes, there will be a DVD version."

There ya go. Sooner (or later) than you thought.

About time. . .the only reason I ever bought a DVD Rom for my computer was because I thought they were gonna start replacing CD's as the common format. Rather than releasing games that take up 2, 3 and 4 CD's as is so common today I thought they would have started releasing such large games on single DVD's much sooner. Like I'm gonna sit in front of my computer in my office chair to watch Lord of the Rings on my computer monitor when I have a nice big comfy squishy leather sofa and a 52" HDTV with THX in the living room. . ."shyeaah"

One of the reasons that games are using more than one cd is to prevent piracy. Someone is less likely to download two cd's worth than one. If they filled a dvd with data, it would probably reduce piracy even more because of the larger download size and also because the technology is so much more expensive.

And another reason is that most games nowadays are bigger than 700mb...

Like simpsons hit and run. I don't think it is worthy of three cds.

Take a look back at games that used to come on 4 floppy disks.
All we get extra are **** video clips at the expense of plot and gameplay.
I've still not played a game that was as engaging as the second monkey island game on 4x5.25 disks (played on hard), nor one that was as groundbreaking as the original doom on 4x1.4Mb disks.

This is a little off topic but why wasn't copying 1.44 floppies big? You know how CD copying is big today, why wasn't copying 1.44 floppies? I know floppy disks were a lot cheaper back then than blank CD's now. And 1.44's had no copy protection.

y'know, they sort of did have copy protection. It had something to do w/ deleting a specific file when the disk was copied or installed or something. I don't remember exactly.

SOme games like Lemmings had a small bit of the disk that was only readable by Mac computers (and the lemmings.exe file). AT least thats how it was explained to me.
A normal diskcopy was incapable of copying the mac bit so if your original floppy got damaged you lost the ability to play the game at all.

I second that opinion!
