ok, my dad will buy a computer sometime soon and i can't convince him that Athlon T-Bird is better than P3, can you guys help me get some pros about the Athlon that is better than P3?
one of the main reasons he is set against Athlon is because they create way way too much heat, any way to shake this idea away from him?
i already know the following pros:
-Athlon is cheaper
-the motherboards are faster front side bus
-DDR RAM is better than SD
-(i think) Athon has more L1 cache and more L2 cache
and some thing about Athlon having more decoders or decodes more efficiently, somethin to that effect

OK hopefully this will help u out...
The AMD's perform more somputation per clock cycle therefore nd AMD chip and an intel chip rated at the same MHz actually perform at two diff speeds in real life. The AMD IMHO does more for less clock speed..The real computation of a processor power should be computations per sec*clock speed insteadof just using clock speed as they are advertised. Basically that means a 1GHz AMD and an INTEL 1Ghz on identical systems will actually run faster. And the extra heat is caused by doing the extra computations per clock cycle. And the extra heat is actually NO PROBLEM.. I have an AMD ATHLON 1GHz. runnin @ 1.2 GHZ no prob and no heat probs.. ust usin the normal fans.. I OEM proc fan/hs with 2 case fans. 1 pusher 1 puller..
Normal cpu temp for me is 105F and sys temp is 84F.. House temp is 76F
During my fav game Jane's F/A18 My sytem temp goes to 91F deg and CPU temp climbs up to 109F. Still well below the max temps u are allowed.. I think AMD says 200 deg max for proc.. Or somewhere around that.. MY benchmarks only push it up to 109F and that is sustained processor usage @ 100%

Just show him proper benchmarks, or show him benches of the P4 1.3ghz versus a 1.3ghz Athlon. I've saw a sight a while ago and all the P4 could beat the athlon at was memory bandwidth in Sandra. Showing him how the Athlon will beat a P4 will probaly hit home more than comparing the PIII-athlon directly.
BTW the athlon has 64kb L1 cache and 256kb L2.

wow thx, do you think Intel will ever make a processor as good as the P2 ever again?
that thing was so fast, 512kb L2 cache rocked

If you really want to blow his Intel support away, show him this comparison (http://tech-report.com/reviews/2001q1/p4-vs-athlon/) .
It actually has a 1.1Ghz T-bird on PC133 RAM beating the 1.5Ghz Pentium4 on RDRAM in some of the real-world tests! If that doesn't convince him, I doubt anything will.
(I'll remember how to do links right the first time pretty soon http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif)

I'm sure your Dad will counter with Intels proven reliability.
Just be expecting it.
