i bought an athlon xp2600+ today and i get 80'C then my mobo cuts out. to stop it from doing this i unplugged the 12V CPU power supply lead to the mobo so forcing it to use 5V. im just wondering if running it in 12V gives u an advantage...

specs:
athlon XP 2600+ (166MHz FSB, 1.9GHz)
396MB DDR PC2100 (233MHz)
ASUS GeForce FX5200
MSI NVIDIA K7N2G mobo
windows XP Pro (MSDN)

Did you put thermal grease on the cpu prior to mounting the heatink? Or did you remove the plastic film from the thermal pad on the heatsink?

How good is the fan on the heatsink?

I had the same problem before. I applied a very thin layer of thermal paste and my temps shot up to 80C. I reapplied a generous blob on paste on the cpu core and my temps went down to the 40C-50C range.

Stock voltages should run everything just fine. The problem must be with the lack/excess of thermal grease or maybe the heatsink isnt seated right. check that out.

the heatsink is workin ok, its too hot to touch and i did have a problem with the fan. it was showing up at 0RPM on the bios and last night it stopped. i replaced it with a new one today and that one seems to be working ok.

i got plenty of heatsink paste on it. the heatsink is for athlon 3200+ and processor is only athlon 2600+. it has a copperbase air-cooled. its rated to 5000RPM and thats what it is spinnin at now.... should i get some better fans like air-cooler II with nozzles and stuff.

Heatsink Manufacturer (Akasa) (http://www.akasa.com.tw/)

model of heatsink is AK795 (socket A)

:D :D :D
hmmm its ok now, running at 30'C with this new heatsink

thanks for the help anyways :t

30C is an amazing temp for an Athlon XP. Be glad and enjoy the comp. :)
