Heatsink Lapping

Anyone out there know ewhere I can get some good sandpaper in the UK for lapping my CPU heatsink. I mean the 400,600,100 & 1500 grit stuff. Can it be bought from the lockal B&Q DIY place or fro a specialized place?

Check your local auto body repair shop.

I used 600, 1000, 1500 grit when I did my heatsinks.

You could try the automotive paint suppliers. I usually stop at 600 or 800 grit. I've tried finer grits (more highly polished surfaces)and it didn't seem to make much differance.
Has any one tried laping the CPU also? I would think that if one flat surface is good two flat mating surfaces should be better.

You can't lap the CPU core surfaces since they stopped making the 450 MHz P3 and Celeron processors. Those old CPU's had a nice, BIG core and the tops were concave by a few thousands of an inch. The other reasons is that the new processors have the surface of the processor right under the surface of the core and you CAN'T lap them.

there was a link of a guy who would replace bad capacitors on your mobo, on his site he has a guide to lap your heatsink and cpu :eek:

I've been looking and can only find references to laping old intel processors. I've got an amd 2500. Unles I find someone else lapping AMDs I theink I'll play it safe.

I've heard of ripping the heatspreaders off P4's, but never lapping them. They are about to be a bit harder if not impossible to remove soon from what I've read. As for AMD, lap it if you don't want a processor. That is the core itself, can't do much at all there.
