lo again :)
just wondering before I buy it along with my 2500XP, will an Aero7 Lite cooler be enough cooling for OC'ing? (with case fans, and a PSU fan drawing air away from the CPU).
Im hoping to get at least 11.5x190...
If not, any recommendations for other coolers? (pref. available from Scan or Ebuyer, UK).. then I dont have to pay delivery twice :)
+ where can I get some Arctic Silver from? - I can't find it at Scan/Ebuyer :(

Fisrt of all...

Maybe a pound or so dearer than other places but you will get Free Next Day Delivery in the UK! Thats where I got mine.
Not sure about the Coolermaster stuff...but have heard that for the price the Speeze coolers available at Ebuyer are pretty good. Allthough if your going to be overclocking as much as possible....its probably worth paying the delievry charge for an Aeroflow, Silent Boost or something similar.

oo cheers for the link, much better than paying £7 for the Antec silver paste... as Arctic seems to have got so many good reviews :)
I'll have a look for the coolers you mentioned...
Im hoping with good air flow + arctic silver the Aero7 lite should suffice, if I don't see another cooler.

Set that baby at 11X200 FSB, and boom, you'll have an XP3200.
Keep an eye on the temps...but it should be just fine.
Make sure you use that AS5 sparingly, very sparingly.
I read somewhere that you place about 1/2 the size of an uncooked piece of rice directly on the die of the CPU...no more.
In this case, more is bad...:)

"I read somewhere that you place about 1/2 the size of an uncooked piece of rice directly on the die of the CPU...no more."
should I spread it out directly on the die?

some do...some don't.
Realistically, you are going to put in the CPU and HSF assembly on the mobo OUTSIDE of the case.
It will spread itself out as needed, and fill any small voids.
I've never had any issues with this...

I'm not going to be taking my motherboard out of my case... far to much effort for the case I have (it can be akward)..
Unless I find somewhere to buy some screws for my case, so I can add some more support (its lacking in the top right atm, I have a load of screws but none of them fitted the case, so I had to use the few that came with it sparingly :/ ).
I think I will spread it out, for peace of mind.

You are asking for trouble...
I know it's time...but, time well spent.
All it takes is one slip of the screwdriver trying to pry off the old HSF, and...boom. now you need a mobo.
Kinda like the old addage:
sure...you can rebuild a carbuerator while it's on the car...but, one little screw drops down the manifold, trouble.
Take that time to tidy up cables, re-route them...whatever.
Plus...with the mobo out, you can make sure the HS is seated squarely/properly.
I'm sure most will agree...it's best to take the mobo out!

Yeah lol, I slipped with the screwdriver when the mobo was out of the case installing my XP2400+... I nearly cried.. luckily I didn't damage it :)
I'm probably more likely to damage the mobo taking it out/putting it in (its my least favourite task).
If I remove the PSU I've got plenty of room to work with..
I may decide to take it out.. who knows, perharps even figure out which wire belongs to the LED's (Pwr/HDD) as I have about 12 individual wires with no labels coming from the front of my case, took me long enough the first time around to figure out which was the power button :/
um, btw its me "Hibbs"... I must of created a Starburn account (my usual alias) a while ago lol.

best place to get Arctic Silver 5 is www.bestbyte.net
$5 w/ free shipping. I just bought some from there. Stuff is thick. Really thick.
The Thermaltake Silent Boost is very good and very quiet for a good price. www.newegg.com has it for around $26
dont waste your time with the Vantec Aeroflow. Nice name and nice looks, but kinda loud.

Not much good for someone in the UK.

I think my temps were slighly better with the Vantec than with the Silent Boost (2-3 degrees C difference). But thats just my system.

To each is own, Scott...
But, every Thermal take product I've owned...case fan, CPU, etc., I've ebayed 'em in very short order. They sure do look cool, but...underperforming and loud.
That silent boost does get some good marks, though...
I'm a firm believer in copper slug, aluminum fins, though....
If you can hear any CPU fan...over case and PSU fans...that's bad. I can't say that I can on any of the three rigs I've built with 'em....

I have never been a fan of TT, I have heard and seen bad things from the Volcano line. But my faith in TT has been renewed since the debut of the Silent Boost. I dont own it, but when I read 100 reviews that say it cools like crazy and is silent, then I have to seriously consider it.
But true, to each his own :)

Amen brother!
I got bit by a cool as heck looking Volc. 11 +, with adjustable speed, etc.
But...at 5K RPM, I thought I'd have to switch to aviation fuel for my rig..
;) :D
I've been very, very happy with my Vantec...but...
I've been toying with the idea of building another rig soon, budget rig, and...I may just go that route. Thanks!

Should be good with that...heard pretty good about it.
That's the one with the horizontal fan, looks like a barrel, right?

Yep...bb.
I googled it, and that was the first one I pulled up too.
Looks kinda funky...that's a good thing!
I'm a big fan of the copper slug/aluminimum fins too!

The only thing about the TT Silent that I didnt like was the fact that it came with the contact area on the HS unfinished and kinda rough. Just got some 400, 800 & 1200 grit paper today...gonna try and polish up the HS contact face and see if it makes temps any better. Never done it before...so should be kinda interesting to see results:eek:

Correct me if I'm wrong, BB...
But, you don't want it to a "mirror like" finish...but more or less smooth, without defects.
I've read in multiple places that a mirror finish will actually not cool as well.
(Nope, not taking what you said literally or word for word, just throwing my .02 out there...)

HA....I cant really correct you cos I dont really know what I'm doing. Cant be that hard though...its only metal and sandpaper!
I've read a few articles on OC webpages regarding this and some go 1500-2000grit which does give like a mirror finish. I'm only gonna go to 1200 which I think will just be enough to make it really smooth...not mirror it. The finish at present really aint good! I will report back afetr I've tried.

This is how to apply Arctic Silver... http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm. According to the maker of it anyway. Good luck! :D

So...less it better here!
