mistakenly i thought i had a win95b-drive(in front of me outside the pc!...). this drive had an error i thought i could only solve by deleting windows-folder and setting up again. it finally worked. but it was a winme-drive! at start i can read about the wrong version in msdos.sys.
WINVER:4.90.3000
How can i open msdos.sys and exchange from winme to win95? i need the whole commands.
why i am asking this? i tried to defrag in safe mode) but all the time(despite sygate-firewall being deactivated) it asked to use scandisk. i could finally defrag in standard mode. maybe this mistake will be solved when msdos.sys has the right winver-entry.

Download a Startup disk for the Windows version you're working on and just copy COMMAND.COM and MSDOS.SYS from the floppy to the drive:
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

uuuu, i do now have big troubles. windows95b does not start anymore. c:\ is the last sign i can see.
1. i copied command.com from dos-prompt to c:
2. in windows with showing all files i copied msdos.sys )from one of my two bootdisks, one is a new one from bootdisk.com)to c :
what was wrong? i didnt know how to show and copy msdos.sys in dos. just copy didnt work.

you probably didn't remove the attributes to the msdos.sys file.
attrib -r -a -s -h msdos.sys

i will do this IN DOS :
attrib -r -a -s -h msdos.sys
copy msdos.sys c:
attrib +r +a +s +h msdos.sys
CORRECT?

C:\attrib -r -a -s -h msdos.sys
a:\copy msdos.sys c:
c:\attrib +r +a +s +h msdos.sys
PERFECT NOW?

YES, in priciple you are right, we have other problems. but i invested so much time doing this stupid(error) winme-win95-conversion that i didnt want to risk anything.

i did the following thing until now:
1. because i mistakenly copied win95b instead of winme (onto a drive where i deleted windows)WINVER:4.90.3000 was shown at startup.
2. i copied command.com to c: at dos-prompt. started from within windows.
a:\copy command.com c:
3. copied msdos.sys from within windows(all files shown)
then after the tip here i finally ended up:
4. made a new win95b-bootdisk from bootdisk.com
5. in dos-prompt:
c:\attrib -r -a -s -h msdos.sys
a:\attrib -r -a -s -h msdos.sys
a:\copy msdos.sys c:
confirm with y(yes)
finally
a:\attrib +r +a +s +h msdos.sys
(+=alt 43)
c:\attrib +r +a +s +h msdos.sys
it still does not work, stops at c:\

it still does not work. himem.sys is lacking.
i guess its one of the followings:
1. some years ago i recognized i had to rename win.com to win.cim or whatever if i wanted to copy win95b over win95b. i was very surprised when there was no error! of course copying win95b over winme causes none.
2. autoexec.bat showed this in first line:
C:\>Rem By Windows Setup- Set Comspec=C:\Windows\Command.com
plus last two lines show display and country-settings. these are not shown on older autoexec.bats.
i checked the older autoexec.bats.
they showed his line after windir and winbootdir-line on third position.
i deleted the am line and inserted it as third line. nothing is working.
i have a second win95-drive. what should i compare there?

Compare? You can copy the files from it. Include all - MSDOS.SYS, COMMAND.COM, WIN.COM, AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS. There are duplicates of the last two files in the Windows folder. Get those too.

msdos.sys seem to be broken. i can see only one line showing:
;sys
second working drive was full of informations.
i am ashmed to say: when i had my second drive on the system i started the copy-process again. instead of waiting and doing what bpb said. i will now copy win95b again over the old(second) drive and then do what the master told. (
(it seems my brain is half-way full of todays 3d-panorama of mars. i will setup a unique site showing it without(anaglyph glasses). showing small pictures in 3d is no problem, but long panoramas was impossible until febr, 2003. meanwhile check http://www.europanorama.tk
