I am a cheap *******, need new ram, and want to buy generic.

Basically, i'm planning to buy 400mhz memory
I'm planning to replace the memory within a year after buying it anyway
I'm going to run it at ~350mhz (for the time being at least)

any reason as to why I shouldnt do this?

edit: http://store.yahoo.com/digi4me/mi253ddrpcd4.html

I'll probably buy 2 of those. $36 a stick and free heat spreaders..

I would get Corsair Value Select 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-3200 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-025&catalog=147&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1) -- they are CAS2.5 and very good for only about $10 more for two sticks. No heat-spreader but you don't need them anyway. Good luck! :t

ANKUN, I am all about cheapo ram. I have been using 1gb of cheap ram for 1 year. It says its Xerox ram, but my bro says they are Samsung chips. But hey, as long as ram runs and does its job, its all good.

Cheapo RAM is fine for anyone a budget as long as your not expecting to do anything in the way of overclocking and tweaking with it. However not all Generic RAM is made equal, and it is common for some Generic stuff to have uality and stability issues even at the speed for hich they are rated.

Ojne alternative that woin't bust the bank is Crucial, their RAM is relatively cheap, overclocks fairly well and doesnt mind being tweaked, in addition to this you get top notch component quality and a bullet proof lifetime warranty to cover it in the rare occurance soemthing shoudl go wrong

crucials 400mhz 256mb sticks cost $1 more a piece than corsair value select. newegg also has free shipping on the chips and the corsair select are rated at 2.5cl while the crucial chip is rated at 3. I think if i buy either of the 2 i'll get the corsair.

Kingston hyperx series are vaery nice ran its better than the regular ram they have 256mb ram that runs at 333mhz 2-2-2-5 t1!!! speeds for only 56 $ a stick.

I bought kingston 1gb 2x512mb 333mhz regular ram which works great.

One thing dont be cheap like my roomies and buy one ram from one company and then one ram from another and one of a different size and expect to run a dual channel ddr system just fine. So if you buy cheap ram go with same make and model.

If your MOBO has an Nvidia chipset it may not work with cheap ram. Watch out for vendor games I have seen cas timings of up to 11 on cheap ram. Its no bargan if it runs slow.
Enjoy!

CAS 11!!! I didn't know RAM was run at that speed. That's nuts. If your BIOS says 2/2.5/3, then it runs at what it says, correct?

gamers.

I'd go with the Corsair or the Crucial both aforementioned.

As for CAS 11, there is no CAS 11 ram that I've EVER heard of, CAS 3 is the slowest (highest number) there is - I think your confused about your timings there.

I likes Twinmoss ram .......... Cheap & really good IMO :)

Before I knew better ...I was looking at all of the discounters for cheap memory and I noticed that the latency numbers (when printed) for realy cheap ram tended to get higher for higher speeds. The highest I found was 11 (maybe a typo?) and it prompted me to find out more about timings. Since then I have assumed (always a bad tactic) that at least some of the cheap ram marketers are selling substandard ram at inflated speed ratings by playing with the timing numbers i.e if they coud get one stick to work at a given speed by using high latencies they would rate the product at that speed. I could be wrong though.
Enjoy!

twinmos is good, don't overclock much on the 512mb chips, but who cares since I bought the next speed up for my cpu anyway,

CAS 11 is known, article round here somewheres, honestly. Ask BJS.:t

For the Nforce 2 chipset the optimal settings are indeed

2-2-2-11
