Windows 2000 Slowing Down

My Windows 2000 system has always been slow (because of the nature of Win2K). But lately, it has been slower than you would believe. Every 5-10 minutes, it just rips away at the hard drive for a minute or two. I can't do anything while this is happening. I don't have any viruses or anything. My Paging File Size is set to always be at 1024MB (1GB). My hard drive is defragmented. Any ideas?

My Windows 2000 system has always been slow (because of the nature of Win2K).Huh? If windows 2000 is slow by nature thats a new one on me. My install of Win2000 is as fast or faster as any other Microshaft OS.
Anyway, have you checked your task manager when this activity is going on to see whats causing it?

I mean on startup. But apart from that, no it is not slow. That is why I am concerned. Windows Me can start in 15-20 seconds with a ton of software running on bootup. Windows 2000 Pro takes anywhere from 1-1/2 minutes, to 3 minutes.

Oh yes, and BTW: There is no way I can see what is doing this, because, as I said, I can't use the system when it does this. The only thing running in the background is NAV2001, and it isn't set to scan or anything.

need more info... go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services... sort the list by the status (started or not) and list off what is running... also, include system config, whether you are on a network, cable, dsl, or dialup...

edit/ also include any software running when this happens, go to taks manager and list off what is there (everything) along with the memory it is using...

I know this is going to take you a fe wminutes but I can find your problem once I have the info... should be something easy to spot.

I don't think Cody is wrong in thinking that Win 2000 boots slow. My stepbrother and I had our computers side by side this summer. His was an Athlon @ 1.4 with Win2000, mine was an Athlon 750 with Win95. I could almost boot mine up, shut it down, then boot it back up in the time it took him to start up.

Windows 2000 is not slow, unless you have a ton of **** starting up with it.

n715dp may be on the right track with the services idea. Sounds like you have an indexing service running every now and then. On a slower machine, this can grind the whole system to a halt until it's done.

"Slower Machine"? You can't tell me a system that can Rip around 200-300FPS from a GeForce 256 w/ 32MB RAM is a "Slower Machine"...

Ok, rather then copying everything... just list the name of the services that are started, dont need descriptions and such, that should only be a few... also, list the names and mem usage from task manager.

If you are running NTFS, more then likely it is the indexing service that is causing you trouble... usless really unless you are running SQL Server or something like that... go into add/remove programs, then windows setup components and uninstall it. if that doesn't work, post back with your services running

Well, before I do that, I am going to do a test run with IE6. I just installed it last night, but didn't use the computer. STarted it up this morning and almost 30 seconds was shaved off the startup time (hrrrm...)

Have you tried enabling "DisablePagingExecutive"? Try changing registry settings as follows:

1) Go to RUN and type regedit


2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management\

DisablePagingExecutive = 0 by default - change to 1. Set this to 1 to increase paging of the NT Executive to RAM, instead of the paging file. Only recommended with systems having 128 MB of RAM or greater.


IoPageLockLimit = 0 by default (512kb) - change this setting to 2048 for a larger Disk Cache. You will see a big difference when copying large files or applications that use heavy disk access.


LargeSystemCache = 0 by default - Win2K Pro and NT4 Workstation comes with a default value for this field, NT4 Server and Win2K Server and above has this option set at 1 by default. If you have more than 256MB RAM, it is worth using Large System Cache for optimal performance since more system files will be loaded to physical memory....
