okay here it is..my replacement ibm75gxp is now dying again so it looks like im going to have and try to ghost the whole OS partition to my quantum drive again.my question is is there any programs to write the MBR to the other disk? when i used Norton ghost last time it didnt want to boot from the Quantum

Jack, I don't know how savy you are with software, but, you might be able to do it with this (I'm not that savy)
Ranish Partition Manager (http://www.ranish.com/) I know it's a partition program, but I think it also lets you copy the boot record off and onto your hard drive.
(I'm positive about the onto part)

There is a utility called "AEFDISK"..an FdISK replacement, that may do what you are looking for. Its on the "Techworm" bootdisk but also available from its own homepage. http://www.aefdisk.com/
These are the commands that go with it that give me the impressin it may be useful to you.
/save:<filename> - save the MBR to a file
/restore:<filename> - restore the MBR from a file
