I have an emachine with a micro atx that I am giving to my daughter. It has a 633 but I want to upgrade it to something faster. As long as a Mother board is a micro atx will it fit?
No matter what MHZ or brand of processor it uses?

not really. most of those OEM systems are proprietary. the back panel will probably be different, and i'm not sure the new MB will be compatible with your case. the power supply requirements would probably be higher than what the emachine can handle. you'd be better off getting a new case and a regular atx board.

I guess I will just put a 766 processor and another 128 mb ram in it, and call it good. Thanks for the info.

Of course the motherboard is replaceable. It is standard Micro ATX. Most OEM manufacturers use standard parts, for example most Emachine, Gateway, and Hewlett Pacakard machines use standard MicroATX boards.

Also most eMachines Socket 370 systems would work with 100MHz bus PIII's and Coppermine Celerons.

Gateway and HP have always used standard architecture. Sometimes they've used LPX, NLX, or Flex ATX boards, but those are standards too. Most use Micro ATX boards, some use full ATX boards. Many lack the proper holes in the backplate to mount a board with a different port configuration, but that's easily fixed. Gateway uses an odd sized ATX power supply, and HP uses the PS3 and SFX size ATX power supplies. PS3 and SFX can both be found at Newegg.

most have power, reset, misc buttons all in one plug. you cant break them down to use on a standARD MOBO. ALTHOUGH I DID GET LUCKY W/ LAST hp-it was an asus oem.swapped it ok

... and of course, the wimpy power supplies that used to be in those mATX cases for Celeron systems are no good for a P4 or Athlon board. Unless you go with a rather low power all-in-one board like this one:

http://www.pcchips.com.tw/product/M810DLUv75c.html

that has a rather low power demand Duron processor directly onboard.

completely true, the HP I'm using to type this post has a micro ATX board and another gateway here has a long, skinny power supply.

your'e prolly best off just adding some RAM, blow the dust out of it and let it run till it dies all the while saving for a decent system.

I know emachines pretty well because I run a shop. I would look at an ECS board that emachines actually uses. It's a KM266 board. They sell it at a totally insane price at emachines, but you can order it at plenty of online retailers for very, very cheap, and it will fit in your case just fine and of course you will not overclock it so it will run fine. You could also get the enhanced 200 watt PSU from the emachines parts store, or directron has it. If you need the extra power as your emachine uses a 120 watt PSU. And it will fit, and would be best if you ever upgrade to a better video card. I would do it anyway.

Here it is at emachines (get ready to fall over).

Here is a good price for it (it's the same exact board)

Now just pop in an a stick of PC2100 (512 MB) DDR, and an XP2400, and you good to go for a simple upgrade.
