hi folks:t
i formatted a friends OLD system and installed XP
all was fine till i setup his internet connection

he has a "HaM" 56k modem OLD and i finally got the right drivers installed and was able to setup and connect to the net via
BT openworld but..BT did'nt recognise the account he gave me!

i then used another BT disk and was able to setup a new account

 Here's the problem when i connect to the net i get an "auto shutdown in 45 seconds" report!

Blaster worm:

There may be others. You have to install an updated AV program right away.

thanks...it's seldom connected to the net so he did'nt install norton AV!
I'll use the removal tool!
but considering it had been formated and this worm started strait after i connected for the first time......
or was it on a driver or app i downloaded and installed for him?:t

Hmm!! i had the msblast worm a few month ago are they the same worm?
i've still got the removal tool for that one!..i'll check that out!

You have to go to Windows Update regardless.

BTW - viruses come in random e-mails these days and worms come in all by themselves. You cannot afford to be unprotected.

all you have to do is connect to the internet to be vulnerable to the blaster. it's been out for a while now, so you should definitely read up on it. The first thing I do before going online is to install the blaster patch.

tried the blast removal tool. before i read your last posts!
it said the blaster worm was there and had removed it!
BUT the machine still shut down! with the RPC error report!

i've now D/L'ed the "WindowsXP-KB823980-x86-ENU" EXE
and will try this tomorrow!

i hope this works! as i dont realy know how to manually close the ports listed and i refuse to let the bloody thing beat me:mad:

You should really get into the habit of downloading the windows updates. This worm came out months ago and you could have saved yourself the headache.

Well, in all fairness, he just installed XP and was hammered before he could even get started. I knew that I would see this sooner or later.

Ok, I'll give him that. Make sure to download the network distro of SP1 and the blaster patch and keep it handy. The first thing after I install xp is run the service pack and update rollup 1.
