You guys helped me awhile back, maybe you can again. I am not sure if this is a game problem requiring a patch, or a technical problem requiring some "tweaking." I have been playing Red Alert 2 for a couple of weeks without any problems. Now, I have a hard time getting the game to start on occasion. Autorun starts as it should when I insert the cd. When I click play, the screen turns black as it loads the next screen. Sometimes it will load, sometimes it will just set there until I reboot. I tried reinstalling, but didn't seem to help. (It took several tries to reinstall due to freezing.)

I read the 'readme' files in the game folder and made the changes suggested there: added a 'videobuffer=no' line to an .ini file; checked my cd rom drivers, etc.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Please keep it in simple terms so that I can understand it!! Thanks, as always, for your help.

check for how clean the CD is, end task any programs you don't need (virus scanners, firewalls etc) also find out what version you have and get a No-CD crack from here:

I have an answer for you if your using Windows XP.

use the Program compatibility wizard. Change the way the program runs to Windows 98 and you should have no problems. I did the same thing for Yuri's Revenge, the RA2 expansion pak, and no problems to report. Here's how you do it:

1. Right click the icon of the game you want to use Program compatibility on.
2. Select properties from the list
3. change the tab above to "compatibility"
4. check the blue outlined box in the "compatibility" part of the window and then select Windows 98. Click ok in the window.

Try this and see if it doesn't fix your problem. if it doesn't, you might want to even try Windows 95 for compatibility instead of 98.
