I have an amd 366 on a crappy motherboard

i wanted to upgrade to something around an athlon tbird 800. I know the computers alright and i was wondering if this project is within my knowledge. I was alsowondering if there are any online sources for this kind of project. I would probably have to replace hard drive, ram, video card and sound card. it is a really big project. Also, my last question, what type of power supply is needed for an athlon tbird? Thanks

It's seems like you'll need whole new system, so better build it all around brand-new case with decent 300W PSU. Sorry, can't help you with any online resources for performing upgrading tasks http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

It isn't beyond you. It really isn't beyond many people that think it is. it is not a hugely difficult task, provided you read.

Like ND said, you will need a new power supply, new RAM, a new motherboard and a new processor. You may need a new case if you have an AT motherboard instead of an ATX. You may want to upgrade your video card, since it is probably antiquated.

I would just go ahead and build a new system. You can get one fairly cheap. check this out: http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum10/HTML/001850.html

You will need the

CPU
socket a Mobo
at least 156mb sdram
at least a 250watt psu
a fan/heatsink for your cpu if u buy oem
and probably a new case too .. the mobos today are a lot bigger than ones from when that 255 came out.

What kind of budget are you on? Personally, if you are asking about your own skill level, I'd recommend that you build an Intel based system with a motherboard that has an Intel chipset. It will be less headache.

Cheap cases these days could actually be quite good. I just built computers for each of my sons with $20--250 watt cases. They work just fine. One has a 733 Celeron; the other a PIII 1 GHz.

But as Labor Day is coming up, if you scrounge around you may get a lot of the stuff on rebates! Just front out more money than the stuff is worth, in case the rebates don't come.

In the last year, out of about $200 in rebates, I only got juked for $40!

In short, you need a new everything because you dont want an antiquated component inside a brand new computer. It would simply be useless.

Got to this site and spend lots of time with a piece of paper and a pen. I built a 750 Duron with a MSI KT7A133 MOBO, Nivida G-force mx 400 with 64 mb, 256MB RAM, 10 Gig hard drive, full tower case, coolers, heat sink, floppy drive 52 max CD ROM all for a total cost of 447.00 and over 5 months, it was just a project to do and it w was the 1st one I have ever built. If you gotta friend to help you with setting up the CMOS then you will be fine. LOL http://www.pricewatch.com/

If you do go to www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com) make sure you also check out the vendor first at www.resellerratings.com (http://www.resellerratings.com) to make sure they are reputable.

I know about pricewatch.com. its a good site. I think i will probably have to build a computer from scratch. The reason i needed some online sources is because i get confused sometimes with the power supply wires and etc.
