Hello!
I've been playing historical strategy games for a while (Empire Earth, Age of Empires, Empires: Dawn of the Modern World etc) and I’m pretty disappointed how similar they all are. I’ve created a pretty clear image of what The Perfect Realtime Strategy Wargame looks like to me. Here's a brief introduction:
1) Create your own units. In stead of just choosing whether to build Pikemen or Swordsmen, it would be nice to design your own soldiers. As you gain access to new raw materials (hide, iron etc) you are able to improve their gear.
2) Your soldiers can walk on top of the walls. Anyone seen The Two Towers? Wouldn’t it be really nice to be able to place archers on your walls, as seen in the battle of Helm’s Deep? So, when the enemy comes to get you, you can bombard him with arrows as he approaches. And when he finally makes it to the wall, he has to employ ladders etc. to actually conquer your walls first, and you’d have sword fighting on the walls. Intense and exciting!
3) New unit control system. I would also like a new unit control system, so that if the enemy approaches your wall, you can command your archers to attack whatever units you regard most dangerous without actually having to direct all their firepower onto one single of those units. (ex. Archers: Attack: Pikemen) So that once you’ve given the order, they fire at those units only.
What’s your vision of The Perfect Realtime Strategy Wargame??

Yea I've been pretty dissapointed in the last run of real time strategy games as well, nothign too great. The top of my lsit right now is rise of nations, it combines the good parts of turn based strategy(alpha centauri and civ) and the ebst parts fo some rts, into a really great game.
I'm also aware that they are making a new lord of the rings based strategy game. They're going for the scale oyu see in the movie and are using some of the ai programming actually used in the movies to make the units fight. Should be cool

I know it's probably not as 'strategic' or 'hardcore RTS' as maybe the other mentioned games but the only RTS games I ever played were the C&C series, and yeah I loved them and thought they were great but I know what you mean when it comes to limitations. I think when it comes to troop design it's borderline RPG as I get a picture of someone designing say, a D&D character, except this is mass rather than just one character, if you get what I mean. I probably haven't explained that very well, but nevermind I'm too hungover to concentrate and I dare say care
I think the perfect RTS game would have to incorporate every single possible option and / or outcome in battles, and allow the player to actually do anything they can think of, like the Helm's Keep battle you mentioned. No limitations basically. Probably very difficult to do though. At least while trying to concentrate on making the game look good, which is always important.

personally, I think starcraft is the best rts we have so far, and **** close to perfect.
although warlords 3, a tbs, is one of the best games ever.

Ever play Metal Fatigue? Very good RTS where you can "build" you own "Combot" (mechs) from different parts. It also is true 3d and has excellent gameplay. You should be able to pick it up fo cheap now.... its a few years old, but still very fun. The combots need crew to command them, you can pop off arms and such wile on the battlefield to reconfigure your army...etc etc. It also has 3 levels of battle, subterrainien, land, and orbital. Quite fun game... woudl reccoment to anyone.

Thanx for the tips all of you! I'll see what I can get my fingers onto..
But does anyone know a "historical" RTS (Medieval age etc), where you can design your own soldiers? Would be very nice..

it would be nice for those ambitious and adventurous people like yourself for game makers to do this....it is a good point!
I am sure that considering how most ideas somehow revolve into reality...someone somewhere is getting around to it....
Again, it certainly wouldn;t hurt to contact some strategy game makers and let them know your thoughts...who knows ..they might get a bug up their **** and try this.....once its out of the bag..others will follow suit ( only in America )
The two games I most like in this category are:
Rise of Nations and Most all the C & C series ( except the very first one which I sent back as it was way too simple )
Medeval Total War is very novel and good also, but hard to control all the tiny soildiers ( neat concept though )

I've just sent e-mails to the manufacturers of Emprie Earth and Age of Empires, letting them know what I just told you guys.. Seems to me it's about time the manufacturers of this kind of game came up with something new, in stead of just copying each other - like Activision did when they "copied" Empire Earth. Empires: DOW and Empire Earth are just so amazingly similar... Should be laws against that kind of activity!
Anyways - I'll let you know if I get any replies from the manufacturers I contacted.

I might have played a demo only of Stronghold..but I can't remember as I sometimes I like a game all right and then go on to other things and forget it...
Strategy games are a real kick in the ****..! take up alot of time too...but thats why they made the save game feature..
We are all so picky and spoiled to a point of being overly critical...but its OK..we can do that....
Most of these game makers I am told do not make alot of money for their invesment in time and other on these games..so the competition is pretty good per se" on the average.
Groundbreaking games like Warcraft, C & C Generals and Rise of Nations are few and far between....but thats to be expected.
The perfect RTS war game would be an RPG such as Baldur's Gate II or Gothic 2, and since they've already been made, you don't have to re-invent the wheel.
We now have a whole new genre to play.

Ditto on that! I do like the extra colorful 3D types as these are the in thing now....
Some which i though were beautiful and amazing in graphics ,but lacked holding my interest were Age of Wonders ; Battle Rhealms and some others...storyline and the way the game runs and holds your interest..
That new game Prince of Persia game has gotten some good reviews in most all areas..esp. graphics...
again if we could buy them all then life would be sweet..and theres enough out there yo keep us all busy
