Try closing all other applications before trying to play, make sure only the essentials are checked for startup.

Any applications that may try connecting to the internet should definetly be shut off.. including Windows Update.

also, if you use an AV prog, make sure that you disable any automatic updates during gameplay.

Does this problem affect any other online games?

Everything like kazaa , msn etc are closed and all updates are paused so it aint them.

I think its just coming down to who has a good server as some servers run fine all the time , some dont run at all and some run then lag !

Im going to get a better internet connection cable and a better phone extension lead aswell to see if that works

Thanks for the help

Do you have Norton Internet security? That creates mucho laggo.

Frnchdp mentioned the AV - background apps already stopped? You could buy a new phone cable but it's not likely the problem.

It's not uncommon for a phone hookup in one part of the house to run differently than the other - if other phones, fax machines, are somewhere nearby are used with a splitter you'll be affected, and even a corroded phone jack would cause problems.

The key might be what you dad's systems looks like compared to yours - specs on both, and modem brands on both?

Vegnagun's realised the problem. The lag is due to the quality and speed of the game server plus internet connection. I find that anything above a ping of arond 35 - 40 which fills up with players espcecially more than 16 soon experiences lag. Mostly it isn't a problem though in the heat of the action it can be frustrating. Quite fun to watch someone else experiencing it as their avatar grinds to a halt though :-)

Be sure that the AV is completely shut down though as some like AVG run a background realtime scan service which does not close when the program is closed, using the task manager to check is the way to go.

My dads system is a 1.4 athlon , 512 ram (sd), 80 gig HDD and an ATI Radeon 8500 LE , so my system is better (except he has 1.4 have a 1.1 CPU) as i have 512 DDR 333 , an 80 gig HDD and a gforce FX 5600 so i dont think its a hardware prob.

His pc connects around 46k where mine connects ne thing from 31k-44k and i have a much newer modem so i dont think its that either

Is he connecting to the same service and online games and at what times? Do you have telephone two lines to the net?

We are both using the same account on AOL to connect to the same number through the same phoneline.

It doesnt matter what time i connect on my dads pc and it always seems to lag with me yet not on his !!

Look at possibly your video card setup. I'm not familiar with the gforce stuff, but check for latest drivers, software issues within the game (readme) and review any card tweaks that may be slowing things down, anti aliasing and the like. What resolution do you play at compared with your dad.

As for OS, are you both on the same? You could make comparisons of running processes to see what else you have going on. I don't use 2K so I'm not sure what needs to be running to prevent problems

Are both modems the same type? My soft modem was giving me problems like low connects and lags so I dug into the junk box and shoved a 4 year old 3-com hard modem into the machine. Everything runs much better online now.
Hope it helps.
Enjoy!

I have the latest drivers for my card and iv turned off AA and the other thing and i turned down the resolution to 1024 X 768 so everything is running the same as my dads.

Whats a hard / soft modem ??

We both are using 2k and i shut down all background progs that 2k allows u to (sometimes it will say it is a vital program and other times it says i dont have the privlages dispite being administrator for my pc).

As i say the only thing i can see that diff is that my pc is more updated than his eg./ i have 512 ddr where he has 512 SD.
He even has loads of background progs running and yet still no lag.

It sure is a weird one
