hows that for a thread title?
the place i work has about 50 remote users connecting to our unix system. At there end they are using 'dummy' WYSE terminals (welcome to the stone age) and various different USRobotics external modems (mostly 33.6 and 56k sportster fax modems). They dial in to another USR modem that connects to a term server, that uses a VPN to connect to our Unix box (wacky setup but the explination would be longer than this post)
ANYHOW...we can't get the older style modems anymore and the new ones we are getting from USR (USR5686E 56k v.92) don't seem to like connecting. If I put a new modem on each end of the connection, they seem to hang up mid handshake, If I use one old modem and 1 new one sometimes they work, sometimes they connect but i can't get to a login prompt. we do have some instances where a new modem on each end works fine, but if i switch one of them out for another new one, nada! i have used the USR control program to check all the settings and they are all the same.
why would some work and some not? WTF?? very frustrating. and talking to the helpdesk at USR you wouldn't think they even made modems!
