While having a slight problem with a certain online game disconnecting on load ...plus some other little bugs...I have a interesting question..
Alot of us have a firewall program installed and of course when hooking up to a online game we either have it listed in our page for allow connections ( setting )..or we turn it off, which i find to be best for no interuptions...but It just occured to me that when I do this it allows for unknown hackers or spamware to come hacking in and ......here is the point!....could this be a reason or possibility for a quick interuption of a mapload process or even the game play itself???
Of course i am hoping it is just the connection itself to a particuliar server or my dispaly properties acting up ( see my link titled..Object Dock )

Depends what problems it is you're having really. I think people tend to get very paranoid when it comes to hackers. I'm the same. I don't think an intrusion would give you slow down or lag online, I think any problems you're having with online play like that will just be due to the server you're on and your internet connection.

your right about certain servers, and i am pretty finicky about what i preceive....
I have a good Cable connection and think it may be due to some programs in my system and also the number of people connecting up now has increased dramatically...which very well may be why things get quirky at times...How much can one server tollerate ??
Good Question Heh?
I am by most standards a novice at internet gameplay..although it really isn't a big deal a long as the maker has the program set up well with the interfaces that go on.
What is the most played online game for you and do you have any problems at times with connections or the like?

Probably not; whenever you allow the game to access the Net you open only the ports the game needs to use. If no service is listening on those ports, how could someone hack into the system trough there? Only if the game itself has vulnerabilities.

That depends on a variety of aspects, most of all: the server's internet connection, the server's load (number of users using it), the other users' internet connection speed, and in some games, the server's hardware config has some influence too.
IMO your problem is either related to some user lagging the whole game or the server itself having bandwith "hickups". I can give you an example: while playing F1 2002 online, if a race has already started and someone joins, everybody's connection to the host will suffer because of that, and you can notice it because your game simply freezes
I am (...) a novice at internet gameplay..although it really isn't a big deal
For the people that use the game and network it isn't; for the developers it's quite a hard subject, because of the inherent difficulty on matters such as load balancing, communications optimzation, etc...

Thanks alot for the informative info and the style you present in replying....sound like you;ve been doing this a long time..
I just got rid of some Winstyles and Windowblinds stuff and have my desktop runing the standard XP style.
For some reason,,things are much quicker...
Also, I just have alot of **** ( mostly good things ..but others?? )
in my system and who knows whats loaded into my explorer browser, although genrally it is fine. At least i got rid of the Pop ups (virtually none )
its probably mostly the server connection....Thanks again!

if you are going to play online pick the lowest ping # and it's
best to disable your firewall otherwise could cause problems
during game play

I forgot to mention this: read the game's documentation on online gaming as the firewal might interfere; take this example: the game only uses port 6900 to communicate with the server but may use other ports for additional resources or it may even use other programs to obtain other resources (just as an example, it could use the "ping" program to query other users/servers network connections). I don't know what firewall you're using, or how it's set up, but on this matter it's always best to follow the game's instructions on how to set up the firewall for a specific game.

I'm not, but my girlfriend is, so I'll have to drive about 250km to actually see some snow :)
