Ive had this problem since ive had this computer (3-4 months now), and ive tinkered w/it, but i havent really addressed the problem yet. I havent noticed it w/other things...only yahoo stuff. Yahoo games (mainly yahoo pool) yahoo chat and others dont work at all...for games it loads but i get the stupid little red X in the corner that every single one of us hates w/a passion (you know you do), and the chat applet doesnt even load. it just does its little loading animation, then it stops and says i cant load, would i like to try again, or try the java thing. nothing works. Any ideas. Ive tried most of the setting in under Internet Options, alas nothing. Please help me, i need my Yahoo Pool.

My sister had this problem. She formatted her XP machine and installed SP1a. It removed the MS Virtual Machine. Look In Internet options. You should see a section called Microsft VM. It should have options for Java under it. If not you do not have the VM. Try the SUN version of Java if you can't find MSJava.

Here is a picture to help you find what you need in the Advanced tab of Internet Options. (I could not add it to my other post).

You can still get MS Java from the net in a few places. Simply search for Microsoft Virtual Machine on google. It seems to be a bit faster on Yahoo than Sun's version.

Is the windows XP built in firewall turned on?

You can check this in network connections properties.

Also, do you have the current Windows Critical updates installed?

Do you have Norton System Works, Internet Security, and/or AV installed?

My sister uses a different IM. She did not mention having issues with that.

Did you install SUN Java or the Microsoft VM?

Do the yahoo applets work with Java installed. If so we can work on your IM problem. Lets do this one at a time.

I downloaded Java Webstart, and the chat applets work fine now...every now and then i need to reload into a room, but overall, fine. However, private messaging in the chat rooms doesnt work. I type the text and press enter but it doesnt send it, the text just stays there. I tried clicking on the send button, but that doesnt work either.

May be a bug in the programming - either yahoo or sun. The chat may have been designed and tested with MS IE so it was designed with MS VM. If that is the case you can download the VM from MS.

Uninstall SUN first using Add/Remove programs. After the install you must reboot. Go into Internet Options when you have the chance and enable the first and third options in Microsft VM section. The logger is up to you.

Reboot and try again.

Well, turns out that you cant really download "MS Virtual Machine" anymore. MS site just kicks me over to Java site. Any other suggestions?

This happened to me on a new computer once, and changing the subnet mask (network settings) fixed it. (Believe it or not!) I could browse everything except Yahoo; changed the subnet mask (either to .255 or .0 -- the opposite of what it was), and that took care of it.
