I have recently built my daughters a PC (running XP Pro) and along the our original PC (running XP Home) have installed a home network which shares my broadband internet connection thru a router. Everything seems to be working correctly, I can see shared folders on each machine from the other, can transfer files between machines and both machines can use the printer attached to the XP Home machine and the internet.
Both my eldest daughter & I enjoy Red Alert which is supposed to be playable across a network & we throught we could play against each other but I am unable to get the 'Network Game' option to appear. I have search many forums & been on EA games web site & found out that I need IPX Drivers (which I have installed on both machines) one forum suggested I disable the 'auto select' on the IPX & change it to the 802.2, I tried this but to no avail. Red alert does work on each machine independently but they don't see each other. One point which may of may not be of any importance is that when I try to change the new XP Pro PC to the 802.2 setting the network settings utility locks up solid, even task manager will not close it & I have to shut down the PC.
If you have any ideas it would be appreciated
Best Regards
Kev

when game loads click on options
network
lan settings
network card
you should see different address, pick a different address
click ok and go main , network and see if you can see
each other
do it till you see each other
red alert is a pain in the *** for networking
happy gaming:t
btw make sure your cd key is different on each computer otherwise no go
Can Win XP Pro support Dune 2000?
I was thinking of upgrading my AMD PC from Win 98 SE to Win XP Pro. As that computer belongs to my dad, he likes to play old PC games that Win 95 can even support.
I hope some of you can help me here.
Thanks...
AMD configuration:
AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.2GB
Abit motherboard (I forgot about the model)
Kingston 128MB PC 133
Sound card (Cheap and brandless)
VooDoo 3 2000 16MB video card

Hi
Do you mean the 'Network' option from within red alert because that option does not appear or is it the network on the 'control panel'
Also can I put the Allies disk in 1 PC & the Soviet in the other
thanks for the advice

make sure both of your computers have the same workgroup
name ie: MSHOME
and each computer has it's own computer name
after game loads
click on options,network,pick address,ok,main,network
you should be in lobby where you set game up and you can see
her computer
those cd's will work, but if you buy Yurie the expansion pack
each computer needs a disk with different keys
make sure both of your computers have the same work groupname ie: MSHOME
westwood is the only one i have problems with other lan games
like starcraft you wouldn't have a problem with but redalert is
a good game once you get it to work

Hi
I have checked & both PC's are in the MSHOME Workgroup. The 1st is COMPUTER1 & the 2nd Guess what... COMPUTER2.
Do you have to register for internet game to get the network version to work? The only options I have seen is in the game for the Game Speed & Audio but nothing about any lobby. In the manual it mentions the lobby but its talking about the internet game.
thanks

Here's what I found at this site, hopefully you can get it running. I have not done this myself, but apparently it worked for someone.

Ok, this is how you get EVERYTHING including lan to work under Windows XP and the latest patch manual_patch303_english.exe to function ... **** I'm good. First, this is what you need to have in order for this method to work. Have a windows 95/98 computer beside your xp computer.
Windows 95/98 Machine. #1. Install Red Alert on that 95/98 computer & the new Westwood Chat WC4221E.EXE. #2. Install the RA108USP.EXE patch. #3. Install the manual_patch303_english.exe, then run the ra95.exe so that all of the registry keys are installed, make sure the game runs, it will also ask you where you want to install the 'Internet Components' or something like that, I would reccomend installing everythig into the 'Westwood Directory' I put mine in c:\games\westwood. #4. Klick on start -=) Run -=) Regedit.exe (enter) #5. Klick on (+)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -=) (+)SOFTWARE -=) (+)Westwood #6. Then click on 'Registry' in the upper left hand corner. #7. Then 'Export Registry File', you should see at this point down lower on the pop up menu a selected radio button that sais 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Westwood' #8. Then save the registry file.
Windows XP Machine #1. Insert the Red Alert CD Into the drive, klick the right mouse button on the setup.exe file and goto compatibility mode 'windows 95'. #2. Install Red Alert into the same directory on the new computer that you installed on the old computer. #3. Install the Updated Westwood Chat 'WC4221E.EXE' into the same directory on the new computer that you installed on the old computer. #4. Install the CCGOLDXPPATCH.ZIP #5. Install the RA108USP.EXE patch. #6. Run the game to update the registry, the game should work at this point, install the other patch too manual_patch303_english.exe, run the game again, it will ask you the directory you want to install the internet components, make sure you specify the same thing as you did before on the 95/98 machine, then it should give you an 'ERROR' or some ****, the game should NOT run at this point anymore, but follow the next steps and it will. #7. *Important* Copy the registry file that you saved from the windows 95/98 machine onto the XP machine, and click on it. It will ask you if you are sure you want to install it, just klick 'yes'. #8. Copy the entire directory from the Win95/98 machine overwritting all of the files on the XP machine. Run the Bi@ch, ehehheh, it should work, if it doesn't email me at kilihari@hotmail.com. **** I'm good.
Note* There is one more patch it will install after you play an internet game using the internet connection inside the game, it automatically downloads and installs.

"Do you have to register for internet game to get the network version to work"
answer no
1-after game loads you should see redalert radar screen and top
right corner a dial meter saying main
2-under dial meter ,your choices
single player
internet
network
movie& credits
options
exit game
click on network ,lobby should come up if not
redalert is telling you it can't see your lan card

you never play this game have you,if his game doesn't see his
lan card he can't get into the lobby to set up a game
to set this game up to play a lan game you only need
a network[2 or more computers] and 2 or more cd's to play the
game
btw he is setting up a lan game ,so he dosn't need patches

Hi
thanks for the advice
I could not see any Network options on my version of Red Alert and as my old Win 98 machine is somewhere in the loft, I tried the link to the Red Alert site. This led me to the Minira game (the same as RA without the missions) I loaded this on both machines (its a free download) and it worked no problem.
thanks again
