I am trying to set up a friends high speed internet connection and everything seems to be set up correctly but it will not connect.

Tech support is not sure whats going on.

Its a Comtrend modem and all connections look ok to me ( I have done quite a few). the computer is brand new ( ratshack - gateway deal) and I had it at my house and hooked it into my home network with high speed and it worked great.

The right lights on the modem are lit up...

Dial up works ok..

I get error 678 when trying to connect...

user names and pw's have been triple checked..

Kids are driving us nuts...

Any suggestions...

TIA

How are you connecting the machine to the modem ?
And if you took the machine from a lan and are now hooking it up diectly to the modem you'll need to release and renew the IP address.
What OS ?

The 678 error is from the modem not finding a connection.

start>run> type in "command">clik OK> at prompt type "ipconfig /release" then hit enter > at next prompt type "ipconfig /renew" then hit enter> at the next prompt type "exit" then hit enter.

omit the quotation marks when typing commands.

I did that and when renewing the ip I got

"an error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection 2"

Any other suggestions???

Type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" and press Enter, to reset the TCP/IP protocol
than type "ipconfig /renew" and press Enter

I there a firewall running ?

On the comtreds we use sometimes you have to assign a fix ip to Your pc that the manual has in it. I think it is 192.168.1.4 255.255.255.0
then it will let you in the browse page so you can sign in and set it up. Is your Isp using PPOE?

The NIC. If you have the disk the modem came with it should walk ya through it. Did you buy this modem or did your ISP give it to you? whats the model? We pre load our modems for PPOE than install them at the customers. Comtrend sometimes don't turn on DHCP server. They leave it up to who ever sets it up. After setup you can turn the NIC back to auto assign again.

OK ill try that...to answer your questions

-the install disk was provided and I went thruogh the whole thing then at the "trying to connect" stage it says it cant connect.

Ths ISP gave him the modem..im not sure of moden 300/301 sound right..thats the option selected in the setup anyway.

I think it is PPOE..

hi

are you using Eastlink

You have two ways of configuring a PPPoE connection.

The first way is by using software that came with the modem. This software will have the PPPoE protocol built in and will want you to walk through a set up to put in your username and password. The username is username@domain (eg: me@earthlink.net) and the password is probably case sensitive. Keep in mind that the domain is more than likely already there when using software.

The second way is if you have WinXP, you can manually configure this since XP comes with PPPoE already. Go to internet options\connections\setup and choose "internet connection that requires a username and password". Type it in when you get to that screen and then unclick the crappy XP firewall so it is turned off.

good luck....

Are you still out there? Its nice to get free help from others but we should share on how we make out. It could help others.

Sorry Dip, I'm more busy than three men these days so it takes me a day or two to get back...

Problem still exists...

His ISP had a tech at his house and said "problem with computer"
and left.

I have yet to get mac# and s/n
Tried the ping as you said but no luck.
Its Aliant

Rob r...I went through the setup disk many times and got same result....failed to make connection,

He still has the connect icon in his system tray and at 10Mbs but when you got to ie or msn or any internet related stuff it will not work (acts like its not connected)

Wish now I had of built this thing iunstead of him getting the "Rat Shack" deal; guess he could take the computer back.

Why will this computer not let me renew the ip?
Something to do with Gateway computers?

Very lost here....

That is nonesense.

First you want to make sure your lights on your bridge are looking ok. You want a WAN light (DSL, Link, etc) and you want a LAN light (enet, etc). If you have these two things then you know the bridge is doing what it needs to do. Second you want to make sure the NIC card is in the device manager without any problems. Then you want to go into network and make sure PPPoE is in there with TCP/IP bound to it and that your NIC card is listed with TCP/IP bound to it on older Windows. On XP, you want to make sure local area connection is in there and PPPoE is there and they are both enabled.

If all of this checks out then it's a problem on the ISP/Broadband companies side. They need to test for layer 2 and layer 3 connectivity over the ATM network. This isn't your problem though and a savy tech will know what to do.

Have you said who the ISP is and what type of connection it is?

I have double and triple checked everything and still no joy...ISP now saying it might be them..they are looking into it

I am doing what is said here to the letter and nothing..

Why will the computer not let me renew the ip in the command prompt..the commands the bushmaster gave me still come up with "an error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection 2"

Does he have 2 lan connections? If so try completley removing both of them, and starting fresh with just the high-speed internet connection. It's a long-shot but it sounds like you're running out of options anyway... Good luck sorry something that should be so simple simply isn't! :D

I guess the problem was in the Comtrend modem....still dont believe it but that was the problem. The ISP reluctantly came back with a new box and bang...worked.

Thanks to everyone for the help on this one..
