I have a laptop HP with CD/DVD combo drive (Sony). WinXP PRO.

Some CDs (programs) with minor errors on them are not played well on the drive. The program they have doesnt install well. The same CD installs well on desktops with no problem in installation. The desktop drives dont feel anything wrong. Scanning the surface of the CD shows some unreadable areas alright but my drive seems to be too sensetive to those errors.

Also, some video files on CDs dont play well on the drive while desktops dont have any problem with them. One video CD causes a total freeze in the computer as soon as it is inserted in the drive and the freeze goeas away when it is removed. I had the CD copied on a different brand and the freeze didnt happen.

I was told that the tunning of the laser lens is faulty. How true is that?

Assume you are talking about burned cd's here, thats what it sounds like.

Its a known fact that they work in some drives and not in others.

If you want the certain apps to work on the laptop your best bet would just be to put them on a brand of cd that you know the laptop has no trouble with.

Its an annoying problem but once your aware of it your ok. Doubt that your lens is out of sync though. Run into this all the time myself.

Yes the CDs are burned manually (If you mean not factory made) and I tried to change the brand for the program CD but that didnt do it.

Are you saying that this happens with all laptops. What is the secret?

Not just laptops, all cd drives.

You said your laptop can read one manufacturers cd right? Thats the way I was taking it.

Does it have any trouble with original cd's. The bought stamped type? If its having trouble with them you might have a problem.

If your only having trouble with certain types of burned cd's i would see no reson for alarm. As i said, just see which cd manufacturer's cd's work and then remake your cd's on that particular brand. Hopefully that will help.

Yes as you said the factory burned CDs dont give any troubles . Only the personally burned ones.

SO I am going to consider sticking to the ones that work. Thanks for the info.
