Friend of mine was going on and on about her new laptop. 400 MHZ proc, 384 Mb RAM, 10 gig HD... Asked her how much it set her back, she said like $2,400 or so. I am sitting there thinking how bad she got hosed when she told me it was a mac. I guess that's cutting edge tech for a mac laptop or something. Since she's a cutie, I didn't really question her sanity, but that seems like a chunk of change for a laptop of that caliber.

Actually I am not sure how the conversation played out. I do tend to have a little more tact than that and the conversation was via IM. I dunno if she gave me the specs or the price first. And she bought it herself. She is going to school for graphic desgin and I guess it was a must have toy.

Macs have the highest customer satisfaction in the industry. Yup, they're expensive but those that buy'em have a solid devotion to them (so don't argue about it with your 'cutie' or you'll never get any from her).
One of my four computers is a Mac. As for how they work, it is a blessing not to have to worry about dll files or file extensions and they do not have the Internet hacking vulnerabilities that Windows has. It also handles fonts more intelligently than Windows.
Lastly, my Mac was built in 1985 (Mac 8500 200MHz 604 CPU) and is still quite useful. I can't say that about any 6 year old PCs I've had.

No worrying about extensions? Heck, I'd rather have them. When I'm on a MAC, I can't ever remember which of the little icon pictures is which. Also, when you made a file with a different program on a different computer (mabye for instance, Adobe GoLive), then when you try to open it by double clicking, instead of opening in a browser window, it says "Adobe GoLive not found" or something like that. Plus, the idiot-proofing keeps you from dragging and dropping on another HTML editor, the file icon just sits on top of the program icon.
On my PC, when I drag any file on top of any program, by god that program tries to open it, even if it's something stupid, like a dll file on WinZip. At least it tries http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif.

I have both pc's and macs and yes pc's can be more fun customizing them but I never, repeat never have problems with my mac. It always works and is much more compatible with pc files than a pc is with mac files.
Some of the problems you suggest you have with macs suggest you are just not that good with them.
I own a retail chain with POS systems built on PC networks. We constantly have downed networks and problems to fix. Our office networks are built on macs and we never have problems.
PC's have come a long way and are getting much better but all they are doing is catching up with and emulating mac technology. PC's are just more entrenched in the market and Bill Gates is a great businessman. Too bad Apple could never get their act together because they have the superior product period.

mac has its ups and its downs
they are greatly under-rated for their speed though, in actual tests a 700mhz G4 is way the hell faster than a 2.ghz P4
macOS is a very good OS, its stable, easy to use and very efficient (its a form of Unix)
you mentioned that she is in some graphic design or something, Macs are the main computers used in graphic design, video editting and sound editting, great for work but that 1 button mouse really does you no good for games :(
BTW, you can play Diablo2 on a Mac so i say she is not gettin hosed at all...... most games of today are on 'hybrid CDs' meaning they can install the game onto BOTH Mac and PC, its like the non-gay version of that song 'anything you can do i can do better'
oh and the reason that Mac is getting SLAUGHTERED by PC is because Steve Jobs doesn't like Bill Gates, and Billy wants to smite him for it
back in the day..... Gates was supposed to meet with Jobs to discuss making software for Macs, after Jobs made Gates wait for over an hour to show he didn't want Gates' help, Gates left and went back to his office, when a friend asked "So are we going to make software for them?" Bill replied "Why should I? I'll **** on him!"
if you have read up on Steve Jobs you can tell he's clearly a shiester, i wont support his company until he is dead and is no longer getting money from computers, he totaly jerked his co-workers around through scams and pitches and schemes, Wozniak should have tried to get his *** booted out after Jobs tried to COMPETE with MS instead of work together

Mac has a great product, has great marketing schemes, their look and feel is copied by everyone but the way they run their business is horrible. Just like they spurned Microsoft they spurned game makers and gamers alike. They have such a deeply entretched liberal culture that I don't think they will ever get the hard core business side of things right. too bad
