I have a few questions and need the answer.
I have 2 video cards. G200 and Diamond i740.
First, about the G200, when I installed the driver(from the original disc supply) I can see the AGP 2x is enable by using the Pcilist from Entech. But when I update using the lastest driver from Matrox sites, I only see the AGP 1x is enable. Can anyone tell me why and how to enable the 2x using the latest driver. In Quake 3(1.08) timedemo 1, demo1 and demo2 I got around only 33 and 25 fps. My system is PIII-450 using Asus P2B and 128MB Ram. By using voodoo 2 I managed to get about 50 to 55 fps. Both of the using 600x480 resolution.
Can anyone explain this why cos I heard that voodoo 2 and G200 perform about the same.

Second when I plug my Diamond i740, the pcilist shown the 2x is enable and something I found out is that, first i use the Diamond latest driver and in Quake 3 I got about 36 and 38 fps. When I use Intel driver, I got 40 to 43 fps. Why ????

Need the answer.......

As in different hardware and soft, video drivers aren't all the same. There are manufacturers that write better drivers than others.

Back when (not to long ago at all,) vidcards weren't as capable as they are today. The performance gains achieved in the highend cards, and mainsteam cards alike, was the use of third party drivers for specific applications. The cost of these drivers were around $250~$400. The perfomance gain was huge.

Even today, a manufacturer can produce a vidcard with a single graphics chip and make it comparable (not quite, but comparable and cheaper) to the performance of a dual chip design with standard or mediocre drivers.

As to the 1x/2x issue, the Matrox card may need a Bios update to work properly at 2x agp standards with the newer drivers...

I already flash to the latest bios.
When there is a new bios I will flash it.
