I am thinking about setting up a wireless network in my home, 2 story w/ furnished basement, and have a few questions. The modem & router will be in the basement and the other PCs will be on the 2nd floor. What kind of set-up would I need to be able to set up the network

Check out Linksys and Netgear. You need to decide whether you want wireless-B or wireless-G (G is 54Mbps where B is 11Mbps).

Make sure the router/access-point is centrally located enough to provide a signal to all the places you'll need it upstairs.

You'll need two wireless NIC's to go in the PC's upstairs. My advice is to go with the same brand that you use for your router.

Other than that, it's all software config which you should be able to find either in the stickies on this site, by doing a search on this forum (I know this has come up quite a few times before), r by checking out the site Practically Networked (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/)

going between floors can be tough. the wireless field is more of a donut than a sphere, so don't position your computers directly above the router. you may need to adjust your antenna to a horizontal position to get a better vertical signal. there are aftermarket antenna that may also help.
