How is this game? Is it as cool as it seems?
...or rather, *could be* ...
Just wondering what folks think of it...the screen shots look pretty tasty.

...then on your word, I am off to get it Jakk. Thanks.
Just wrapped up the semester classes (and work full time). I need to vegg out on a new game this weekend...I just can't see dropping 50-60 bones for games anymore unless it is something worthy...e.g. HL2/Doom.

I agree with Jakk, it's not open ended like GTA3, and it isn't as modern as it either. I loved it, and it certainly held my attention, was one of the few games that I played through and finished without cheating

Awesome game but to me at least when your done with it your done. The free mode seemed uterly worthless to me, played it for a little while and became bored. However the single played is easily one of the top 10 games I'd say in the last 3 years.

Yeah, I started playing it last night. I was up late (yawn) but I got my coffee this morn.
It is cool. One thing, I started the game and was 'forced' to purchase a new Indeo codec from Ligos to run the game. Is it really mandatory, or am I a sucker? It was 15 bucks...ah well. It runs fine on my system. Can anyone elaborate on it?
Its a cool game. Reminds me of GTA. The vast cities and jobs and what not. The cars are a lot slower than GTA though. So far its cool. I am already stuck on one mission. We are collecting 'funds' from a Motel outside of town and I drove all the friggin way out to it only to be mysteriously stopped by some unknown force in the game. I mean we are driving on the road out past the airport and all of the sudden I am stopped and can't go any further. What up with that? I mean right in the middle of the dang road, I am on top of the little red cross on the HUD and then stopped cold. Can't move forward...kinda lame. So I got out and started shooting things in a rage...
If that is an end of the map, there should be some road block to prevent me from even traveling that far on the road...
Ok, the coffee is kicking in. I will stop writing about this...

Aye, Mafia was a decent enough game to play. Not perfect, and if you look for em you'll spot it's flaws, but it's the same with any game. It kept me happy, anyway. :t

The City is a newly built one, as the years go by these roads will be opened to you and you will see the progress of buliding, e.g. the airport which are not there at the start of the game but are major landmarks in later years

Yeah thats one of the gems of the game, time progresses and things get newer. I'm really hoping they make a sequel that starts where it left off in the 1960's or so to modern day but they need to make it more much open ended.
Dont know about that codec, I didnt need to install one when I played the game although I have Adobe After Effects and Premiere so it might have been automatically installed when i used those programs.

em, you have been dupped. When you buy a game you never have to buy something else - everything you need to play the game should be on the discs (game related stuff such as DX...)
Unless of course tou bought it cheaply and this was one of the "cons". You can always find free alternatives tho (legal ones to) if you look hard enough, ask the right people.

Mafia is one of the best games I ever played..
GTA 3 dosnt even come close to its its very real.... The game play and charecters are awsome....
Free ride is ok, But freeride extreme is a total waste..

Yeah, I was duped. I can admit it. What a sucker. You know, I think it was for the short opening developer movie...upon booting the game, my system sent me back to the desktop and said I needed a specific codec. What a sucker...
Anyway, I am cruising along. It is pretty fun.
The race was a pain in the ****. Kept sliding all over the track...

MAFIA 2!!!!!  cant wait for it. Mafia 2, hitman 2,
What what will be the story line?? Tom is dead :( Maybe his son will take over ;)
Hay I had trouble with this too but there is a way to and finish first with out racing!!!!
Drive up to the first checkpoint and slow down. Behind the boulders is a short patch of sand where you can drive onto the closed road. This of course is the "wrong way" and if you plan to go through it, you will be faster but not complete the lap. You will not win unless you do the following. Drive up to the end of the road, just past the "Dunniel" (or something similar) sign, where you get your checkpoint information and select "Replace Car" (default is [Keypad 0]). The goal is now just a few inches away. You must to do this five times. By doing so, you can finish the race in a little less than six minutes. Note: Make sure you do not crash on the closed road as the "Replace Car" might not work there, or will place you back to the first checkpoint.
This will help you finish the race....
once you damage the car a bit its handles a bit better

OK! it just had to be a matter of time for people to wake up and give some serious opinions about a game which is on my Top five list...all time...Just a fantastic game all the way around including Graphics and game engine ( smooth! )
The detail on the cars is just amazing and the characters and ESP> the very cool music ( old time rag and Jazz ) are real special !
I have Vice City and I like this game...far better.
When it was out for about a couple of months I bought it for the full $50.00 and i never do that ever..... It was worth every penny to me.
Today you can get a new or used item for between $30-$40 or so,maybe cheaper...

I'd completely agree with the above statements, I've conquered nearly ever new hit title that has come out, and in recent years, Mafia is still one of my favorites. Unlike the GTA series, you're kept on track in a more "linear" style gameplay, but you still have reasonable freedom throughout. The facial expressions and animations are top notch even by comparison with more recent titles. The storyline was significantly better than GTA III or Vice City, and it literally played like a movie. Very well done. I might knock it out on the Xbox when they release it just to experience it on my Sony WEGA 36" and my Harman Kardon 7.1 Surround system. . .

jonwes..
Since i got a new 7.1 surround sound system and Audigy 2 ZS card i am going to play this again...
we agre on the storyline and other aspects as being superior to GTA or Vice city....but then again we look for different things in different games..not to compare
The ssound system makes a great deal of difference in overall enjoyment of these types of games
I had a basic Ge Force MX 420 card with 64MB and the game just rocked..graphics and all..

Rabbitrunner. . .
I was running a GeForce4 MX440 64MB when I beat it the first time. Now that I've got a Radeon 9800 Pro and a 21" Viewsonic G810, I'm tempted to replay it again. That card makes all the difference in the world - not just better framerates, but a completely different "quality" look to the image. I'm running an Audigy Gamer - haven't checked into the differences with the new Audigy 2 - any good? The Xbox version should be on its way by mid January - should make for a great rental for anyone that's already played through it and is looking for some big screen action!

You know..I have alot of games by anyones definition...and whereas I don't like to compare one with another as our tastes change and there are alot of differences in game styles.... I will have to be annoying and say this game Mafia is in my top two of best games played ( of any type ) and the only game i paid the full $50.00 for.....and it was worth it..without a doubt.
I played music for alot of my life ( a drummer ) and have a natural ear for music and sound......and while not being an expert on the various music cards and speakers out there....I was NOT disappointed in the least by this system.
I know companies like Altec Lansing and others have nice speakers also..but the cost for this card ( about $80.00 ) and the Speaker system Z7700 Creative 7.1 ( has 3 front with a 2.5" tweeter and a midrange in each , and 2 side and 2 rear with a 2.5 tweeter , plus a fantastic 10" woofer for bass which is dynomite!!! cost: about $99.00 now on sale WOW !
You can get something like the 5.1 or 6.1 which are just as good and sound great....also.

Jon....in addition to the above......you have the top card on the market in the 9800Pro and i have the FX5900 which is very comparable and very excellent graphics ( superb )
You should see BF1942 WOW!
It doesn't get much better than the cards we have for graphics..
