I have a collection of family video that I would like to email relatives out of state. However the files are 40+ meg. Is there a way to compress them down to around 2-3 meg? Winzip can only compress them 3%. Thanks

Thanks shahani 08-24-2001, 02:18 PM No. Since the file format is already a compressed fromat, you really can't compress further. Like a JPG format: already a compressed fromat. BMP on the other hand is an uncompressed format and winzip will compress it quite a bit JonmaTifa 08-24-2001, 02:21 PM Yeah, most video formats are as compressed as they can be already. The only way you could get a 40meg file down to 2 is if it's something like a Text Document (that happens to be that big) that is so inefficient as is, that it could be compressed big time. What you could do is try usuing a video file converter such that is used for video over the internet (hopefully not one that just does streaming video...) Windows Movie maker can make reasonable quality movie files at about the same bit rate as Mp3, although that's not quite 2 meg, thats about as good as you'll get. You may want to do your video in segments. but the movie maker way isn't too great on quality, but for home movies to your family, it definately pulls it off... wahrez 08-24-2001, 02:26 PM It is very difficult to compress a file to that small a size, the only possible way would be to use a compression designed for internet playback. I would recommend that you download the Windows Media Toolkit (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/en/download/default.asp) from Microsoft which allows you to create ASF video files for playback in Windows Media Player. You can specify the bandwidth to compress the video to, this will reduce the quality substantially but get the file down to a small file size. I have compressed a video which was about 4 minutes long to the size of a floppy disk the video is very choppy and the sound is not too clear but it can be done...play with it and see what results you get? Good luck. ..WahreZ muchmark 08-24-2001, 03:26 PM Hi, One solution is to use Winzip or Winrar to spanned the big file into several small ones. Regards... Scorpio69 08-25-2001, 03:38 AM Like muchmark says, the latest version of WinZip allows you to break files up into smaller pieces, for emailing or putting on floppies. I doubt you would ever achieve that degree of compression. NDD 08-25-2001, 03:49 AM It would be much easier to burn them on CD and mail it via snail-mail, I'm doing it all the time. Best Regards ...
