Hi all

I've just upgraded my PC with new mobo and Athlon chip.
I've put the primary drive onto primary master which contains windows.
I also have a secondary drive which is listed as secondary master. There is a CDRW listed as primary slave

The issue I have is that the secondary master now comes up and says it's unformatted. It's not!!

Any ideas? There is information I need on there, but cannot fathom out what has happened.
All drives are recognised correctly in BIOS and windows, but the second is listed as unformatted.

The motherboard is an ASUS A7N8X-X

thanks

What O/S are you using and what O/S was the secondary drive formatted with?

Is the secondary master enabled in the bios, and is it set to auto detect?

Thanks for the replies.

Using win XP.
Not sure what formatted with, but both drives were previously used with win xp also. I've just transferred them to a new case a mb.

All of the drives are set to auto detect.

The 'boot' drive is an older one, only jumper settings of master, slave and cable select. I've gone for master.
The newer one (IMB Deskstar) has more choices.

The jumpers on the new one are this

Just be careful to jumper either with or without slave properly. IBMs and WDs are very particular.

Try Cable Select too.

Thanks bill, Tried all combinations with no luck

Used easyrecovery pro and managed to recover most data, so did a format and it's fine now.
v strange, will be careful.
it's a deathstar btw (just read on here about the problems they have!!) so will look at the firmware update also.

cheers

I've been using a 45GB Deathstar for 3 years now. The firmware update seems to be doing something.

I wish I would have known about the update before my 45 G died earlier this year.

well my deathstar has been running fine for about 18 months. Both the PC I was building and mine have them in, so will update both :p
