If I have 2 wireless G routers(Linksys wrt54G) would it be possible to use one to connect to the internet and the other merely as an alternate access point to extend the wireless reach of the other? I'm thinking no, but thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

Make sure to disable dhcp on one of the routers.
From Linksys support:

How can I use multiple access points on a LAN?
A N S W E R
Multiple access points can be used on the same LAN, provided they are attached to the same hubs or switches that are connected by Cat 5 ethernet cable.
The channel for each access point should be unique, within the range of 1-11 for North America. This allows up to 11 access points to be set up on one LAN. It is recommended to go in increments of three to the next closest access point:
Example: 3 - 6 - 11
The SSID should be the same for all the units on the LAN
If WEP is enabled, all WAP11 units must have the same algorithm, passphrase, keys, and tx key in order for the wireless equipped machines to roam.

interesting, thanks. But does that mean the routers would have to be wired together? That really limits the options considering the effective range of the signal from a single router is pretty far(i.e. lots of cable before you are really able to increase the range)

yes, they have to be connected via a CAT5 cable.
I think you are referring to a repeater, not just a second access point. I don't believe that Linksys routers have that capability, but I'll have to investigate further. Maybe the new ones do.

can't find anything on repeating in the wrt54g manual, so I'd have to say there isn't any.
