I have a Dell Dimension with a P3@600, Intel mobo..440BX, NVIDA TNT 32MB, Soundblaster Live,IBM HDD and 128MB Toshiba sdram @100Mhz.

I wanted to upgrade the ram, so I got a stick of Kingston PC133 256MB to throw in.The system seems to run fine. When I test it out with Norton diagnostics it fails everytime. If I use one or the other, they pass.

If it posts o.k., and runs fine should I be concerned? Will I have problems in the future? I hate to deadline a perfectly good stick of 128.

Is there a better way to test for compatibility problems? I used an old program called Ramexam which also showed everything was fine.

Do you use old DOS NDIAGS ? I use this proggy too to test suspicious memory and it never failed me - it even discovered faulty memory which passed the in-depth post !
I'd rely on it, but - if your system works fine, without crashes and likes - keep the Kingston module.

I have seen this problem with Norton Diagonistics posted several times here in the past year. Every time Norton was failing to complete the test or showing errors when there was nothing wrong with the ram being tested. I think it was determined that the problem was with Norton Diagonistics.

I was thinking that might be the case. Anyone else agree?

I'd say if it ain't broke don't fix it. If you start having problems, make that your prime suspect.

I have sworn by Norton Utilities since my first PC (about 6 years), but I never found NDiags helpful. Speed Disk is indispensible, however.

Try SiSoft Sandra. It gives pretty detailed info on your RAM and many other items:

I personally would benchmark the system with each stick individually and both together. If they are mismatched, you may actually lose speed. Hope this helps.
