My friend is having some problems with his *deleted* life.
He turned on his computer and it was making a sickly grinding sound. He shut down the computer, and took the case off, started it up, and there was no sound but when he got into Windows suddenly the grinding sound was back. As he waited for the computer to shut down it got worse and starting making a "clunky" grinding sound. He cannot find the problem, he looked at everything inside his box and nothing seems lose.

He really needs some help.

I would guess the hard drive. Try booting to the startup disk. See if it still makes the sound.

I have had a hard drive do something similar. It is an ugly noise. Course, if it is the hard drive he'll know for sure real soon..........

The noise I had was a scraping followed by a clunking and some more scraping. Next day, hard drive deader than a door nail.

I replaced a processor fan a few weeks ago for a friend. The computer was so loud you could hear it 25 feet away. The fan was wobbling, stoping and starting. It was an awful sound. $3.00 later it was all better.

Check the fans.

hey, this is the friend of the crazy guy who posted for me.

sorry for the wierdness of him he's got some screws loose. but i needed somebody to post for me.

well, i dont know what i did, i tried taking off one fan i thought was doing it cause its been loose before, and it stopped making the sound and i sighed in reliefe, but then once i hit windows, it started up again maiking the sound, (i dont have time to listen exactly where it comes from cause i want to shut down incase) and so i was mad, but then i decided to try taking both this fan which is on the side of my case, and the back fan off, and it seems to have worked, but when i put it back on, it doesnt make the sound again like u'd think it would if that was the problem. I listened to the hard drive after i started it up and it sounds perfectly healthy so i dont know, as long as it dont come back...

any ideas of what could have happened? cause the first time it started, it wasnt even starting windows yet, just listing devices, then the third time when i took the side fan off it went to windows then did it?

I also wonder if theres any programs out there that i can use to test my hard drive?

cause if it is that, i want to make sure i start backing up everything left and right!

thanks for all the help so far http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

The case fans could make noises that come and go. So could the hard disk drive. Try running it a few days with the fans unplugged. This is going to be a case of process of elimination. If the noise doesn't come back then plug one fan and test for a day or so. Next try the second fan.

You could have a dry bearing on one of the fans. Some fans have a removable cap in the center where you can sometimes lube them with a drop or two of oil (don't overdo the oil).

If you are lucky its just a fan. I would start backing up important files on your hard disk just in cast. If you are worried about heat buildup with the fans unpluged, just run the P.C. with the cover off. DO NOT RUN YOUR P.C. WITH THE CPU FAN UNPLUGED.

yeah, one of the fans which i suspected of being the culpret is pretty old so it would really fit the case fan problem.

I have all the fans off (except ofcourse the HSF) and my case side off with a big room fan in my window so it's cooled enough to do so. So far no noise, i really hope its not the Hard drive cause i just got it about 4 months ago, and spent all my money on the system i got it with.

well thanks a bunch, i'll start backing stuff up now just incase.

I am starting to hear a clicking sound, and I think it is coming from my hard drive, would this be a bad thing? not loud, but not what i ever remember a hard drive doing before. just click - - - click click - - clcik, the -s are silences.

That is indicative of a coming hard drive failure. Get your data off now.

Whoever manufactured the drive will give you a new one for free + shipping the old drive to them. Be sure to follow their packing instructions to a T.

Good luck

Not a good sign. Is the computer freezing any? Like daveleau said, time to start backing up files fast! RMA your drive. Pack it correctly because they will want to test it when they get it back. If it gets damaged in transit, they can't test it and will probably just send it back to you!

Mike

BTW, what type of drive is it?

BACK UP your HDD NOW!! wait until it starts to squeal like a pig, that'll really freak a guy out. AnyHoo...once you get everything backed up, fdisk and format the HDD and contact the mfg of HDD and they will/"should" exchange it for ya.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but, I don't think IBM will RMA o.e.m hard drives. They will just RMA retail versions. I had a 20gig 7200rpm 60gxp hard drive that arrived damaged a couple of weeks ago. I went to the IBM site and tried to RMA it and they said I would have to return it where I bought it. Sent it back to retailer and got my money back.

Where did you buy it from? Newegg lists their o.e.m IBM hard disk drives as having a 3 year manufacturer warranty. See if your retailer can help you.

Good luck,

Mike

See if they will let you mail it back or use UPS, Fedex, Airborne, etc.

Go here and download the Drive fitness test. You'll have to run it to RMA it anyway. http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT
