Recently I have seen many benchmarks that are both amazing and interesting. Actually some of the scores are down right unreal. That is until I took the time to look at the comparisons.
I may be ignorant of how benchmarking actually works, but, for instance, I noticed that most of the top scores at Futuremark for 03 did not run all of the tests. Some actually ran just 3 tests.
Tweaking our systems to perform at highest level is part of the challenge, especially where some of us are balancing cash to frame rate. Look how many threads discuss modding a 9600 pro or the performance of the TI series cards versus the latest hardware available. We in this community are here for our interest in computers. Some are casual, some live work and die computers. We all want and continually seek better performance from our systems.
Nvidia created a furor when they were caught optimizing their drivers to obtain better benchmark scores. While benchmark scores did increase, overall performance of their cards did not match the increase. They were not true to their customers or the public.
It seems some of us are following Nvidia's example in benchmarking. Tweak the program to get the best results. This is not true to the program nor the results posted.
While an 2400 xp is a decent cpu, without SERIOUS modding (read super cooling), it just wil not outperform a 3.0 HT Intel, all things equal.
Benchmark programs are intended to test our systems and settings on an equal basis. The intent is to provide information to the owner and others so that we can understand the performance of our hardware. When I see that 2400 xp with a FX 5600 vid card out performing my 3200 xp with a 9800 pro, I have to wonder, is that guy posting real numbers, and is a heck of a good tweaker, or is he posting numbers to brag?
Some of us drive porsches, some drive opels and some drive VWs. Let's all be real and true.
:)
