I would like to get a thread going about temperatures, causes and effects. (I couldn't decide on exactly which forum this would be best in..so I just chose the community forum).
If you will, please just post your specifics for right now..later in the thread, we can discuss the extras and beat the thread with general questions and possible answers.
I have noticed that my CPU temp (using motherboard monitor) ALWAYS runs 15 to 16 degrees C. warmer than the system (case) temps. Right now, the CPU is running 40 degrees C. and the system temp. is 24 degrees C. My house/room temp is 75 degrees F. or 23.88 degrees C. (the case is also open..so the system and room temps are about the same).
My HSF is a Swiftech bolt on type (I forget the model#) and an 80mm fan running about 3500 to 4000 rpm (no speed sensor). CPU is a 1.4Ghz Thunderbird running at 1.466Ghz
So, if you will..try to post your own info and lets see if we can find anything common about heatsinks, CPUs, fans, case cooling etc. from a users general setup.

Keep the replies coming guys...I am seeing a trend that surprises me.
I bought the best (by reviews and machining etc.) Heatsink available at the time. The Swiftech has the largest copper base available, or did at the time. The 80mm fan..although its not a speed demon does have a good air flow, about 45 cfm. The heatsink is warm to the touch..but I am seeing more of a 10 to 12 degree c. difference between ambient (case) temps and CPU temps. One reason might be that the later AMD CPUs apparently run cooler than the T-bird series.
Thanks for the input so far.

Bovon;
Have you tried using VCool with your system. It should bring your cpu temp much closer to your sys temp under less than full loads. We have similar specs except that I use fans that move much less air than yours.

Exactly what is VCool?

http://vcool.occludo.net/ It is an excellent little app that will drop the temps of your pc by about 10 C. Try it out. It doesn't do much at full loads obviously, but the rest of the time it works good.

OK,, finally remembered to do this.
Room temp 60F
System 1 AMD K6 266, cpu 35C no temps for mobo here ( no sensors on this old board )
System 2 AMD K6 @ 380 cpu 36C, mobo 25C.
I have HSF and an intake fan in front as well as the PSU fan in back exhausting in both machines, mid tower cases.
