I rarely post about stuff like this. I just needed abouta 128MB chip for this PC I am building as a test machine. I figred goto reliable ol pricewatch. They have been pretty strict about their shipping charged as of late, so I feel safer going there. I looked up PC100 12MB and found http://www.computer123.com was charging $8 plus $9 shipping. I realized taht $9 was high for this, but figured, what the heck. I went to their website and added it to my cart. They want $22 to ship to me via UPS ground. That is such a load of cow-crud.
I have paid high prices before and I didn't mind, but I am not about to pay $22 to have a 5 oz stick of memory shipped to me. $5 tops. I emailed them tonight as well. Lets see what they say.

I ship stuff out UPS Ground everyday. The average cost is roughly $4.00-5.00 for one pound depending on where in the US it's going. $22.00 for a stick of ram? Unless there on the other side of the world or in Canada then that's a big rip! Looks like they are based in Cal. so that shipping charge is load a ****!

Why doesn't anyone use Priority Mail? One pound with insurance and a delivery confirmation is $5. 2 pounds is 40 cents more. Plus they give you all the boxes you want for free.

I use Priority too! I'm more comfortable with it!
Check:
http://www.mwave.com
http://www.newegg.com
for mem modules too! They have good prices and good service!

I recently bought 2 CD's from #9Software in Va.(Great prices and apart from the following complaint good service)
These were CD's alone with no heavy manuals etc. Their website had a bunch of freight options and I chose one. The next thing I get an e mail saying my freight charges would be $62.50 as I was in the UK. This was 3 times what I had paid for the Software. After a bit of back and forth they said they couldn't ship by post so I had them dropped shipped to a buddy in FL for $7.30 and he posted them to me by Registered Mail for another $8.00 thereby saving almost $50.00 from the original estimate. It all took about 10 days from ordering to them dropping through my front door.
I think some places that sell stuff really cheap do try and make up their margins by charging an extortionate amount on the freight.

What really stretches my noodle (must be the drugs that are causing me to come up with such crazy cliches!) is a company that only has Next-Day-Air or some such priority shipping. I recently made a purchase and the shipping was way more than the cost of the product. I just searched through my receipts and can't put my finger on it now. I would appreciate good old USPS as an option!

I like anyplace that ships US Priority Mail. I wish more companies used it. Because I think customers would flock to sites to get 2-3 day service for $6.00.
I've gotten some RMA stuff from manufacturers that was UPS "3 Day Select" going to me, it took 5-7 days... What's that all about?!
But usually it's caveat emptor with shipping. You'll get the memory/whatever for cheap and then pay the extra money in shipping; which then boost it's over or near other merchants.
I miss Outpost.com's free overnight. Their prices were/are so-so, but you actually got a deal because of the shipping.

I usually search pricewatch for reference then hit www.pricegrabber.com (http://www.pricegrabber.com) for the true prices. Just type in your zipcode and boom.
BTW I wouldn't mind getting my noodle stretched......

I second, USPS is a lot faster than UPS and more reliable, to me, I wished every company used because it's also cheaper sometimes http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif.

Some online stores, charge more to make biggere profits. Most of the time its usually the only profit they make. Low ball on prices and increase shipping to make up on profit.
USPS tracking has alot to be desired, usually why people dont use USPS Priority mail w/ confirmation. I still prefer it, its faster and they deilver on SATURDAY (heard rumors saturday deliverys might stop to save money http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif )
I ordered some fans on bestbytes.net and shipping is a flat 5bux. Fast deilivery and when i received my package, postage was 6.80 but i was still charged a flat 5bux!

A while back I had to mail a couple sticks of PC 100 local PO branch wanted me to send as a package, zones an all came to several bucks, took it to another place and said I wanted sent first class mail, no problem under 2 bucks, coast to coast.
$22 for a stick of memory? I shipped a whole computer cpu for $27 across the country a couple of weeks ago! It had THREE sticks of memory in it! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I figure for that stick of memory: +$1 for the box and label; +3 for labor is more than fair.
I had four video CDs sent from Malaysia for $7.00 shipping! It arrived in four days! Go figure!

You know, on one hand I have to say, it's about time people in the Lower 48 got a taste of the prices we have to pay to ship things to Alaska. I'm sure people in Hawaii get shafted as much as we do. At the same time, I can sympathize.
It's usually cheaper to buy locally anymore, since 90% of all mail order catalogs and web sites charge outrageous shipping prices. And they think they are "okay" to do it because they call it shipping and *handling*.
At least now FedEx Ground is shipping to Alaska. Can't say so much for UPS, despite their being more popular.
I just paid $66 to have a 28lb computer case (empty) shipped from CA. Yep, a wee bit high.

I heard back from the company:

It's $9 an up for one piece of memory. In West coast, its around $9, for the mid states its about $11-12 and for the east its about $12-13 for shipping.
Ordering more memory will cost more, same as our competitors.
Sorry if the prices seem to high..
Well, obviously this guy didn't know what he was talking about. I live in St. Louis (Mid States), and my shipping came out to $21. Maybe he is dyslexic and confused the $21 with $12. I just went ahead and bought my memory at best buy. 128mb for $19.99 after rebate. I know i can return it w/o hassle, and its guaranteed to work.
